Bulb types in the car

Who can fill in the blanks? I'm most interested for replacement with LEDs but just in general... did I miss this info in the service manual or owner's manual somewhere?

Also, do all LEDs require an inline resistor? For example, the ones made by superbrightleds.com -- do they all require one of those load resistors for every bulb? How about the PIAA Tera or Raybrig offerings?

Front parking light: W5W, 5W, aka 194/168 type
Front High Beam: H7, 55W
Front Low Beam: H1, 55W
Driving Lamps (opt): H3, 55W, aka?
Front turn signal: PY21W, 21W, aka?
Side marker: W5W, 5W, aka 194/168 type
Interior compartment light: W5W, 5W, aka 194/168 type
Start button light: ?
Headlamp button backlight: ?
Other Dash Lights (?): ?
Reverse: H21, 21W, aka 1156 type
License Plate: C5W, 5W, aka ?
Rear Brake Lights: P21/4w, 4/21W, aka?
Center Brake Light: 16 LED array, 2.5W

Plus any I forgot?
Thanks

Yup. It's a W5W.

One of these:

Other way around.

Low/dipped beam: H1

High beam: H7

Not sure what you mean by 'aka'? H1 or H7 is the bulb type. No other desgination as far as I know.

AFAIK only H4 (not used on the S2 Elise) has an USA-'counterpart' in the HB2/9003 type.

Rear Brake Lights: P21/4w, 4/21W, is that right? Is that really a lamp type?
Yes. Dual-filament bulb. You could probably also use a P5/21W if they use the same bajonet pin locations.

This is the type:

Bye, Arno.

Arno-
Got it, updating my post from above, figure we can have it as a reference. The aka would indicate that it might have a number designation too, but you are saying it does not... no problemo.

Dave-
Saw that post, but it's light on the tech details..

Thanks guys.

Any ideas on the bulbs in dash or behind the buttons (start, headlamps, etc).

Cheers

Now the question...

Does anybody know if there is a place that sells the type of bulb used for reverse, in an LED variant? superbrightleds.com only has 1156/1157 and festoon type bulbs, this is like the 1156 but smaller... I also checked PIAA japan to no avail... ideas? Newman?

The reverse bulb is a BA9s mini bayonet bulb. I got a 1 watt led replacement on ebay. It is about as bright as the stock bulb but draws much less current and no heat.

To clarify, the 06 LEd reverse lights also use a similar 194/168 bulb.

I tried an 12LED instead of the regulat bulb but it wasnt as bright so I used them on the front and know looks great.

Also the license plate lights which most people forget are feston type 39x10mm

Osram upgrades

Link to Osram thread-
http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7549

Low beams are H1
High beams are H7

You can order Osram Silverstars as a brighter than stock option. Cheaper and simpler than HID, but a much smaller jump in brightness.

HID Options

The first option is obvious, one could hand build their own system. I do recommend buying a system that is built for the Elise/Exige so that it is plug and play. No cutting of the stock harness is a good thing.

HID stands for High Intensity Discharge, a type or arcing lamp. They require a ballast to maintain the arc. HIDs will pull a surge of current to strike the arc. HIDs will put out more light, and a cleaner or brighter light. Often noted is a bluish tint to the light, which depends on the color temp of the bulb. HIDs can be more bothersome to other motorists, so extra care in aiming is warranted. HID bulbs should last longer than standard Halogen bulbs. It is not recommended though to use HIDs for a bulb that is only lit for a short time as they take time to get up to full brightness. Flashing HID brights might not work as well.

The typical HID kit only upgrades the standard (non-bright) headlights. It is recommended that you look into an upgraded bulb for your brights and driving lights.

There are two main suppliers to the Elise-Exige market for HID kits. Elisetalk member Ekological has been supplying a custom kit for a while, and he supplies it with different color temp levels. Sector111 has a kit for sale. I will not try to go into the differences between the kits, that will be up to you to investigate.

Link to Ekologikals' kit $415 for 2005/2006 cars using Philips Apexcone 50watt burners. $340 for 2007 cars using Philips Apexcone 50watt H7 burners. Lumens are per the selected color temps (3000k to 8000k). Ballast is 50 watts. Lifetime warranty on all parts including the bulbs.

Link to Sector 111 kit $425.00 using Philip's bulbs that put out 3,200 lumens. Ballast is 35 watts. I believe this is a 3000k color temp kit.
