Headlight goes out, seat belt beep changes pitch

My seat belt beep (the one that goes beep-beep-beep when you start the car) has suddenly started sounding shrill and wavery. This co-incided with one of my headlights burning out last week. I've got the Silverstar H1 headlamps on their way ... maybe the beep sound will go back to normal afer I fix the headlights???

Anyway, otherwise the car is doing great. What a fun toy.

Maybe a relationship - perhaps your voltage regulator is no longer working right?

Hmm. Maybe. I'll check the voltage. I hadn't noticed any other electrical issues and the sound from the beeper almost sounds like a different tone was 'selected' rather than some kind of analog skewing of the existing tone; but still, I'll check the voltage and make sure I'm not on the verge of burning anything else out.

A bit off topic, but where did you get the Silverstars from?
I contacted Osram in England and told them I wanted the European ones and they referred me to Sylvania Osram in the US and they only make the blueish tinted ones DUH< thats why I contacted England., since i dont want the US ones

A co-worker is going to the UK for Christmas and I told her to see if she could find them for me. Luckily, she used to work at a car repair place that worked on MBs and other European cars dealer and knew what I was talking about.

hi xxxotic,

www.autobarn.com is where I got them.
I ordered the 'Silverstar H1' bulbs

I don't know how 'bluish' they are (will find out soon enough!). Supposed to be 4,000K (Bluish lights are 3,500K I think???)

Here's what I ordered. I put them in tomorrow - hopefully I orderd the correct bulb.

No, as far as I understand, the lower the number, the whiter the bulb. In HIDs, 4,300 - 6K is considered white... 8K is getting blue...

Oh good. Looks like I got the correct bulbs then. (I don't want a bluish headlight.) Thanks for the info.

Doma, if you place the key in the ignition with the door open, does that sound off like the seat belt beep you are speaking of? I'm wondering if the 'logic module' that is behind the cluster controls all of this. I have one that will probably be replaced next week, as one of my high beams has been sticking on.. and I also had a high bulb burn out prematurely. ~7 months.

Here's a thread about a discount source for the Osram SilverStars here in the US. It's where I bought mine, as did several others on the forum.

Doma - sorry, but if you bought the Silvana SilverStars, you have blue tinted bulbs. They are blue tinted to appeal to the ricers and people that think that blue bulbs are brighter. From everything I've read about them they don't last nearly as long as the Osram bulbs, and they are blue tinted.

Bummer! Though .... I noticed that the Silvania's I got are the 'SilverStar' lamps, but they also sell a bulb called 'Cool Blue'. Perhaps the 'Cool Blue' is the ricer variety of Silvania you mention? The sun hasn't gone down yet - so I can't quite tell if they have any blue in them. So far, staring into the beams, they just look yellowish white. I'll post a pic once it gets dark.

Here's some interesting info re blue wanna-be-HID lamps...
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...blue/blue.html

And threads like these make me think these new bulbs will only last several months...
http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/sh...6&page=1&pp=20

If they do only last a few months then I'll just move to HID lights. I've got HIDs on the Cooper S and they are fantastic.

Yeah, it's the same tone. It has changed just like the seat belt warning beep.

Okay ... Now I'm really confused. Here's a scan of the packaging on the lights I used. Seems they are the same company?

And finally ...

They are less yellow than the high beams. Thankfully they don't look very blue (there's a slightest hint of blue but it's not obnoxious).

Yes, and no. Osram bought out Sylvania a few years back. In Europe, the SilverStars are the top of the line, legal bulbs. In the US, the brand name Osram is not known, so they use the well known brand name Sylvania. They also use the name SilverStar. The Sylvania SilverStars have a slight blue tint to the bulbs - the Osram SilverStars do not. The blue tint filters out some of the light so you actually get less light out of the bulbs. Additionally since the blue tint is "trapping" some of the energy, the bulbs run hotter - and don't last as long...

Osram and Silvania are same company

I live about 30miles from an osram/silvania factory, the bulbs are made at the same time on the same line.
With that said, that is for this factory only and I could not make this same claim about the ones manufactured in Europe.

Hmmm - my right side headlight was going on an off on its own for a while. Mentioned it at last service and they said corroded harness connections. They temporarily fixed it somehow and ordered a new wiring harness for the headlight... So - do you know the bulb burned out (cos you replaced it) or could more be going on? Just a thought...

In my case it was not the connections. My bulb simply blew out. Looks like a crack started down where the glass stem of the stock bulb is surrounded by the metal. The bulb is now an interesting yellow, blue, and silver instead of clear.

One thing's for certain, these new bulbs are a lot brighter than my stock one. (I suspect something was wrong with my stock ones - they were never as bright as normal halogens). Last night I was smiling cause I could finally see my driveway entrance.
