Anyone tried installing a sub in the boot/trunk?

I have a 12" sub which was bees nees in it's day (Rockford Fosgate 12" Pro Series). Given it's size there was no way I could fit it in the cabin but thought I might be able to put it in the boot. In my 2004 Rover S2 there is a space behind the battery above the wheel arch which would make a good home for it.

Anyone tried anything similar? Any thoughts?

No, but then again my boot leaks from the tail lights so that would be a disaster

How would the sound get into the cabin?

...in a car already predisposed to snap oversteer, you really don't want to be adding significant weight behind the rear axle if you intend to drive it hard...

...i suggest replacing your deep 12" with something better-suited to a cabin installation, closer to the car's center of gravity...

I would have thought it was no different to all the "doof doof" cars around with subs in their boots.

At most it is 5kg which is less than 1% so I don't think it will adversly effect the handling. I've looked at in cabin installations and not happy with any of the "normal" solutions. I'm trying to keep it looking as original as possible.

there are a lot of cars that go "doof doof" with subs in their boot, but they typically do not have things that go "vroom vroom" between the speaker and the cabin.

The sub can be mounted in the boot but it would need to be built into a bandpass configuration (e.g. the woofer sits in a box and fires into a second box.) The second box has a port that runs from the boot into the vehicle cabin. with a 12" the port would need to be around 4" in diameter which could be done as there is room under the rear clam on the passenger side.

Note that bandpass designs are self-loading which means that the woofer movment is controlled even when the top is off the vehicle and can produce big output. Because of this a bandpass box is ideally suited for an open top vehicle.

bandpass boxes sound awesome.... but they weigh a TON

does the boot even have enough room to hold a power 12?

I would think like others stated, throw something small up front

I built a isobaric bandpass box with 2 Pro JL Audios in my convertible Z24 that I had well over 10 years ago. It had amazing bass when the top was on or off. But as previously stated they are very heavy boxes. THe bandpass boxes offer better control of the woofer and the isobaric configuration gives added control and great power haddling abilities. I just went with the stealth box in this car, that way I can easily take it out if the passenger needs more room. mine isnt even bolted in it fits so snug.

By pure magic of course!

For some reason that reminds me of a guy I raced back when I had my first miata. he was an an "extreme S10". He had a throttle body that made a little whistle, so he told everyone it was supercharged. I asked him to open the hood. He did...."Well Where's this supercharger?"

him: its back behind here (Pointing down hear the pass lower firewall).

me: wow, so how does the air get to the intake?

him: well, it comes around here, and then around (waving his hands over the engine like a cracked out magician.)

me: wanna race?

So after I beat him, he says "I forgot to do something, can we go again"

me: (being a kind person) "sure"

so we line up, he hops out of his truck and Lowers the Tailgate hops back in and says "ok, I'm ready"

Guess who won?

I've got my amps in the boot and my sub in the passenger footwell. It seems to be the best lay out as I have a fairly big sub. Initially I had one amp behind the passenger seat, but when I added another amp and the sub my passengers became squished so I had to have the amps rewired. Ugh.

it would need to be bolted in place.. otherwise not a good idea. also keep in mind the guy asked if he could put a 12 in the trunk and have it work, which he could. Nobody said that it was necessarily the best idea: its always a bad approach to say," i have this sub laying around and want to use it in the elise.. its much better to always spec a proper sub to the vehicle but not everyone has the money to do that these days.

Now as far as the stealthbox, they sound great but honestly i find the loss of legroom atrocious and if you have anyone that is taller than 5'6" they have to keep their knees bent. The *best* approach to having decent bass in the elise would be to build a bandpass 8" out of carbon fiber and have it mount just under the right side of the clam (unless you have a supercharger)... that way you dont lose legroom or trunk space.
