Car Computer

Ok so this may seem like a dumb request, but has anyone done a car computer or a high end navigation system?

I want to get an elise in the summer. It'll be used as a daily driver, but I'd still like to get a car computer or a high end stereo/navigation system into it.

You might be looking at the wrong car here. You do realize that the interior is so loud that high-end stereos are pretty pointless. You will never notice the better quality through the road noise, wind noise, engine, etc....

Yes, but people still put stereos and subwoofers, etc in it. Another thing to point out is the lack of interior room.

Many people have upgraded their stereo head unit to something with media capabilities and navigation.

JVC makes a good looking single-din unit with a small touch screen that many have used. Others like the Pioneer Avnic units, but they're a "flip out" type screen that will block the center air vents while in use.

...i suggest the single-din JVC models if you'd prefer not to clutter up your dashboard - they're what lotus has been using...

There was a guy here "noobified" that put a computer in his Exige. I believe he ended up selling the car. Here is one thread he started about it CarPC, Rearview Cam, JVC Deck and Speakers Finally Done!. You can find others by searching for posts he started that might be helpful.

I have one of these JVC units (JVC KD-NXD505) in my car, GPS, 40GB harddrive (16GB used for maps), connected to a rearview camera. Pretty neat. I wouldn't have put it in myself, but the previous owner did that and I'm not complaining.

There is only problem with the GPS: I haven't been able to find out how to buy a GPS map for the Europe and/or the Middle East. Accordig to the GPS at the moment I'm driving around in the middle of nowhere. So it it pointless to use it for directions. On the bright side, it nicely displays the GPS speed on the screen, which allows me to keep track of my speed in kmh.

I tried googling, the JVC website and Navteq website, but have not been able to find any map updates. Do any of you have any suggestions?

Edited: to update model number.
