Control your iPod from the OEM stereo

Hope this hasn't been covered elsewhere (I did a search and did not find it). I know there is a lot of talk about using the iPod and connecting it one way or another but here is a cable that will let you actually control the iPod with the CD changer controls on most of the OEM Blaupunkt radio's. I know it will work on the Los Angeles and Acapulco. $80 at Crutchfield but I'm sure it can be found cheaper w/ a little web time invested....

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-xrH2FnY...0&I=023IPODBOX

I have also seen a mounting kit but can't find the site.

Now my only question since I don't own an iPod is which one to get?

Easy - get the Mini, in silver, to match the interior of the Elise.

Get one that holds all your music. I have a 40 GB iPod. If I were buying today i'd buy a 60.

That has to be the best $80 you can spend

Pack your iPod with music and take it on the road with Blaupunkt's iPod adapter. The adapter allows you to listen to your digital music collection through your car's speakers, and control the tunes with your compatible Blaupunkt stereo.

Just connect the adapter to your radio's CD changer input, plug in your iPod, and you're ready to go. Use the buttons on your stereo to control all of the major iPod functions — like track up/down, volume, and fast forward/rewind — and choose from up to nine of your existing playlists. A tenth playlist setting lets you shuffle among all the tunes on your iPod at once.

And convenient control is just the beginning. Track and playlist information will show up on the radio's display as long as the iPod is connected. Best of all, the adapter will even charge your iPod while it's in use.

Details:

» iPod adapter for select 1998-up Blaupunkt stereos with CD changer input
» select from nine playlists, or entire iPod library
» control iPod functions with car radio
» track and playlist information shows up your stereo's display
» charges iPod while in use
» compatible with Generation 3 and newer iPods
» cable length: 15" to radio, 39" to iPod
» dimensions: 2-3/8"L x 1-1/2"W x 1"H
» warranty: 1 year

Two questions: does this work with the crappy LA head unit? And can I use my Sony MP3 player, which hold 600+ cds? Love that thing!!

I've got a 40GB that holds all my music and a Mini that holds my favorites and a mix of stuff I haven't rated yet. I find I use the mini far more often than the 40GB due to size/convenience issues. Also, the HD in the 40GB is not something I'd really want to subject to my Lotus LSS on a daily driver basis.

Now I am sad. Looks like I'll need a new head unit for the MP3 plugin. Might as well get one XM ready, too, so I can eliminate the calf buster.

It will work with the LA

It will not work with your Sony MP3 player

That is what I meant by Yes and no...

This cable will let you hook your Sony MP3 to the LA but you will not be able to charge it or control it.

Sweet, I was wondering what to do with my ipod now that the screen doesn't work (but it still has all other functionality)!

Anybody know if this will keep the ipod charged as well? (edit: Yes, it will!!)

edit: did some searching, $80 is the best deal I could find...

If you aren't up on waiting until 9/9/2005 for crutchfield to restock the item... Check out: https://www.midwestelectronics.com/login.php - it'll cost you $20 more, but you can have it sooner...

THanks Patricko! The plug looks too big, but I'll investigate and buy if possible (depending on the outcome of my birthday requests )

This is really cool. I love having use of my ipod on long trips (via the blaupunkt OEM cable that I've got running into the little cubbyhole just left of the steering wheel), but it's not very safe driving and finding tunes etc., so I just use playlists and let 'er rip. But having more convenient control of the ipod from the head unit and simultaneous charging capability would be great, gotta get one (along with new speakers !)

Just to clarify - the iPod Mini has a hard drive as well. Currently, only the iPod Shuffles use flash memory. There is a rumor that the Minis might switch over to flash memory as soon as it becomes cheap enough to do, but for now it uses a 1" hard drive.

Those specs are interesting in that they mention playlists and a shuffle list, but don't say that you can browse through your artists and albums. Is it possible that they didn't include that ability? It wouldn't be very cool if you couldn't go to and listen to a specific album. In that case the MP3 CDs are better.

I've got the 20 GB and love it, but if I had it to do over again I'd probably just go ahead and buy the 40 or 60, that way I could hold all my music on the thing, but with 20 GB I still am able to hold around 2,500 titles and podcasts as well, so it's not too shabby
