How to update JVC KD-NX5000

So every time I get in my car now it tells me to update the stereo. I tried downloading from the site and burning to a DVD, but it appears I was unsuccessful due to the file size. Has anyone gone through this process yet? Any tips or pointers? Once I have gotten the update to the DVD is it just plug and play?

The firmware won't prompt you to update it. You download the image from JVC, burn it to a DVD, pop it in, and it does the rest. Make sure you have the car on a battery charger while updating.

The only alert it'll give you is when the map data is out of date. You need to buy the update from navteq here.

It worked for me the first time I tried. Wish I could help...

Same message here saying that the map is a year old. The problem is that there is no newer version of the map. I wonder if the message can be disabled.

As for burning updates to a disc, are you getting some kind of error? It's been a while, but I remember burning the file to a disc and running the update without issue. Can't remember if it came as a .zip or an .iso, though.

I think my problem is that I've never burned anything to DVD before. I may not be doing it correctly. A friend gave me some blank DVD for this. I thought it was just drag and drop. The folder (FWUpdate) on my computer is only 508kb so I don't understand why the DVD rejects it. Anyone local want to hold my hand in exchange for drinks or lunch?

Oh, OK. You usually don't want to drag and drop for the creation of any discs. Look on your computer for the specific Burning software like Roxio, Sonic, or Nero. Hopefully, their interface will be intuitive from there.

When I get to the point of downloading the update, what if I don't have a trickle charger? Can I be driving at the same time that is updating so my battery doesn't die or do I have to be stationary? How long does the update typically take?

I'm using a MacBookPro in case someone is familiar with the process on them.

You download the updates via your computer and that's what gets burned to the disc. The process of running the update from the disc inside the car takes a few minutes.

I don't remember it taking too long. I just kept the car running during the update. I didn't see anything in the instructions indicating that you could not drive the car, but it might be hard to pay attention to prompts that might come up.

The whole thing took about 20 minutes, including burning the DVD and doing the update in the car.
