Which speakers do you suggest to replace the front speaker on 05 Lotus?

I am plagued with the chronic "popping" of the stock Blaupunkt speaker covers, so I want to replace the front speakers on my 05 Elise.

I have heard that some who buy replacement speakers have to enlarge the cutouts on the dash to get them to fit, which I would like to avoid. I've also heard of others who have replaced them with anything but all black complain about the reflection off the windshield.

What speakers do you guys suggest, that don't require any widening of the circular speaker cutouts? And also have ALL BLACK speaker grills on them?

I suggest getting the 5.25 speaker adapter ring from Jim Clayton. He is on this forum. It is a big improvement over the stock 4" and open up a wider variety of speaker choices. I am using his ring and running JL Audio VR525-CXi Front and Rear and enjoying them very much. There are quite a few others using the same set up here.

If you decide to go with the JL's look on ebay I got mine there at a great price.

Go with the Focals. They drop right in and are terrific. In fact I replaced my rear speakers with JL 6W0's (small subs) because I was so happy with the mid and highs from the focals.

I will check when I get home. However I think I posted a thread about it back in June/July of 2006

Ivan, anytime you want to come listen to my system, just say so. It sounds about as good as can get in the elise without spending tons of money.

I have JL TR series. I like em. They handle just having headunit power quite nicely.

The Jim Clayton rings are good, since it allows a larger speaker, just make sure its warm out, and you don't tap your windshield when removing the rings (I might have had to replace my windsheild after such an incident)

oh and the covers are nice and black on the JL's.

Your best bet is to find a good stereo shop and listen to the different speakers. Speakers sound totally different & only you know what you do or don't like.

I have been a infinity kappa fan & also polk audio speakers which sound totally different.

Hey guys...bringing this post back to ask a question..

I notice a couple of you used JL VR525 up front. Those are now discontinued. I saw one another reply using a JL TR525, which is the replacement.

I purchased TR525 speakers for the front of my 07 Exige S. They don't fit. The a/c ducting is in the way. I am using Jim Clayton's 5.25" adapters.

Which speakers should I have bought instead? Or, how are folks using the TR525s??

Thanks!

I'll take a look as well as some photos. I took it to my favorite local audio shop for all the install work. No way I'm messing with that stuff. It took them 6 hours just to rewire my amps from the shelf behind the seats to the trunk.
