Stereo replacement adapter?
Hi all u Stereo Install experts...
I need some help. I got a new deck, alpine, and I was thinking to install it myself and pull out the blaupunkt that is in there now. I was wondering if there is an adapter that will plug into the old radio connector for the Blaupunkt and convert it to plug into the back fo the alpine, so i dont have to cut, solder and heatshrink the new connector that came with my new stereo in place? Doesn't someone on earth make these nifty cross connectors? I would think any stereo shop that rips out other brands to replace with the new brands would do this often right? any info is appreciated. |

The connector is an ISO-DIN connector that is popular in Europe. A VW connector will work, however if I recall correctly the constant and switched power will be labeled wrong on the VW diagram. Just follow the pinout diagram on the OEM radio and you should be fine.
Some newer VW connectors will have the position corresponding to the VW "k wire" omitted. Some may have switched power tied to a pin for power antenna/power amp. Be sure to eyeball it closely and compare the pinout to the table in the radio manual or on the back of the OEM radio.

I believe the one people have used is a wiring harness for a 2001 VW passat. I'm about to do the same thing, I think this is the one but check with them first:
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=14105 only $4.95. You'll still need to solder the conection from the alpine to this harness but then it will plug right into the elise. At least you won't have to cut any of the car's wiring.

Yep. What they said. I about tripped out when I was installing my cousin's girlfriend's iPod adapter in her New Beetle and I saw the same connectors as on the Blau. IIRC, I want to say it's called a quadlock harness.

Works!
Hey guys, just to let u know the VW harness is the right one, then you are right the wires for constant on and ignition are a bit off, once you get that, it is easy sailing. Finally the stock head unit is out, and now i have a stereo that sounds GREAT, what a difference from stock, and without much trouble!
thanks for the help.

I just used the part number in the above post, and then went to fry's, and picked one up, it was more expensive but i could get it "right now"
basically if you go to a stereo install shop and tell them you want the VW adapter i your all set. The part i used is the "Metra 70-9002" VW 1987-2002 Amplified system, but this is not perfect as it comes with two parts, and you only need one of the 2, ( i think the second is for the amp system) |

I'm ordering a new head unit through Crutchfield and, for ease of installation, want to go ahead and get the free adapter that fits the stock harness. I'm specifying the car as a 2001 Passat sedan but I'm not sure if the monsoon or standard stereos will share the connector, anyone know?

If I'm not mistake I beleive the adaptor that you get from Crutchfield will plug into the car's harness but you'll stll need to join and solder the wires between the harness that comes with the head unit and the harness crutchfield supplies you with. Make sure you use heat shrink tubing to cover the solder joints. It's not that big a deal and you do it out of the car it sounds scarier than it really is. I'm not aware of anyone that makes a plug and play harness that doesn't require some soldering.
I just put my new head unit in last weekend and I forgot that someone had mentioned that the constant power supply and the switched power supply wires coming out of the passat harness are reversed. the yellow wire is constant power supply and the red wire is the switched power. If you don't switch them you loose your clock setting and radio presets each time you shut the car off but it will still work. Good luck, Sean Phillips

I'm fine with installing stereo stuff and doing a bit of wiring, I was just happy to avoid having to cut the harness IN the Elise. I'm sure the extra harness/wiring will be a really snug fit in the dash but well worth it in my opinion. I'll post up photos of the install (Alpine CDA-9856 & iPod) hopefully next week.

As many others have pointed out the aluminum edges up inside the dash are extremely sharp. I ignored the warnings and came away with a cut deep enough that for a moment I thought I might need a stitch to close it. It really is as jagged in there as everyone has warned, be careful. Sean

Yeah, I cut my arm pretty badly in several spots as I was installing the blaupunkt iPod adapter. I may wear long sleeves of some sort when I run the iPod cable this next time.
