Wiring Harness for Alpine Install (pics)

I installed an Alpine 9856 HU this weekend to replace the Blaupunkt unit. I had already upgraded the speakers to Infinity models, front and rear.

Thanks to Shaggy and others for basic installation information, it was very helpful.

Part of the project was to build a wiring harness to connect the Alpine to the Lotus radio harness. Below is the step-by-step guide on how I did this.

1. Remove old radio and dash insert bracket (the metal stamping that holds radio in place in dashboard).
2. I went to Best Buy and bought a VW wiring harness, Scosche Part # VW01B, 1986-Up, for $20.00. This harness plugs directly into the Lotus harness.
3. As stated in Shaggy's post, the harness lays out as follows:
Lotus harness ----> VW harness ---> Alpine harness ---> HU.
4. I decided to use bullet connectors to connect the VW harness to the Alpine harness. I did this primarily for ease of installation and also to aid in removal. No soldering required or heat shrink tubing and the bullet connectors make it easy to put in and take out. Lots of wire on all harnesses, so it was easy to make up.
5. I put female bullets on the VW harness and male bullets on the Alpine harness. Plug each bullet into matching connector (See Shaggy's post for connection sequence)
6. Wrap finished harness tightly with tie wraps and or electrical tape.
7. Plug VW harness into Lotus harness.
8. Plug Alpine harness into HU.
9. Install Alpine dash bracket to hold HU.
10. Slide HU into dash bracket, snap on trim, insert controller into HU. Finished!

Hopefully the pics will explain it better.

Wayne

Very clean wiring! Nice!

IIRC Lotus uses an ISO-DIN connector. VW uses the same connector but the positions of constant and switched power are reversed. Accordingly don't go by the VW labeling for the power wires.

You are correct, the VW labeling is wrong for the Elise.

I had to reverse the wiring for constant and switched power: red to yellow and yellow to red.

Glad to hear my instructions helped. I kinda rushed with them so I'm always a bit worried that I might throw someone off.

You can see my "wiring diagram" here...

you are the man this thread summerizes everything you need.

Be carful buying just the head unit off ebay. I bought one, then found this thread and another thread and realized I needed:

headunit: $138 shipped
wiring harness: 6.50 and 5.50 (one for the alpine, the other Swchrosh adaptor)
Metal surround thing: $23.00! what a rip!
ipod cable: $15 (don't buy the one from Hong Kong, those guys take forever to ship even though its $2.00 cheaper)

Thats like almost $190, I think I paid too much for the HU, but it was a BIN deal and I didn't feel like waiting.

and THEN I found out that this head unit doesn't have sound controleld volume like the old acapucalaki.

Does anyone know which wire is for the SCV on the blaupunkt mp 62 radio?

Does anyone know if the wire harness for the 2007 is the same? I have the Alpine HU and it is not so good - it skips and doesn't play my MP3 discs very well at all. The Pioneer in my truck plays them fine.

Anyone know if the same Scosche cable works with the newer Alpines (9886, 9887)?

Thanks

I would say that it does because it is just the middle connector. The stock harness that went to the blaupunkdt fits into the Scosche connector, then you crimp the wire ends of the Scoshe connector to the alpine harness.
