Austin to Las Vegas route?
A friend and I recently drove from Anchorage to Dallas - unfortunately in a Ford Explorer - and bemoaned the absence of a sportier car for some of the roads.
Now is my chance. I am planning an Elise road trip in mid-March from Austin to Las Vegas and back and am looking for suggestions on some good twisties between here and there that won't add a huge amount of time to the interstate-centric route. I can afford to add a few hours to the trip, but not much more, and I would prefer to stay south to avoid snow and higher elevations. Any ideas for scenic/curvy roads that'll make for a more interesting drive?

I took I10 from Houston to Ft. Stockton (any chance to get away from Houston is good)..you could take a minor detour thru Big Bend,Terlingua and River Road/Lajitas ..should not set you back too much time wise.

Thanks, Jeff. I haven't been back to Big Bend since grad school a loooong time ago. It adds 5-6 hours just in drive time but may well be worth it, if just to grab a beer at the La Kiva bar.

Sounds like a blast. I have no suggestions. Enjoy.

Southwest Airlines would indeed be easier, cheaper, and a far more logical choice. The same could be said for buying a Honda Accord instead of a Lotus, and yet here we are...

I'm going from Austin to Las Vegas at the end of March for the Lotus driving school and have been looking into scenic routes. Although not very scenic, I decided that Southwest Airlines is going to be both quicker and less expensive. Having seen the amount of junk that people carry on to some of the flights, I'm fairly certain that I can fit the Elise into one of the overhead storage bins on a 737.
