Road to Haleakala!

Favorite roads? This one defines the words switchbacks and hairpins. This rises up to the slopes of a dormant volcano on the island of Maui, Hawaii. I just came back from the trip, I drove a rented Dodge Avenger with a warped rotor. There was a storm, rain, temperature 35F, gale force winds, freezing fog, but at 10,000 foot altitude, we watched a sunrise above the storm. Beautiful! My camera froze up! Brrrr!!!

Here's the dream: Drive our Lotus up the road to Haleakala!
But I want a warm and clear summer day!

Terry and I got married last Friday on the beach near Lahaina at sunset.
Next year, in January, we'll set up a Lotus Drive in Southern California to CELEBRATE! Maybe in the Santa Monica Mountains, or a drive to Ojai/Santa Barbara. Anyone to join us?

My wife and I rode bicycles down that road. It was a lot of fun! It would make an EXCELLENT hill climb road.

Another road in HI that you need to drive: Saddle road on the big island. Part of it is a patched nightmare, the rest is a smooth roller coaster ride. Anyone know when the road will be completely repaved?

I drove the road to Hana 3 years ago. Seems like it was better for a jeep than a sportscar. The road surface was asphalt but it was needed repaving and narrow. Many tourists and residents slows the flow to a standstill at times. The fun with the Hana road is taking it slow and discovering the myriad of natural wonders on the way!

The road to Haleakala was improved and fun to drive. A driver's road. The beauty was the end of the road, Haleakala Crater.

As a kid, we went up that road in my dads friends 88 Mustang GT Convertible. Being 5 years old, I thought a brand new Mustang was the coolest thing on earth. My dad comments now on how he loved the road, but hated the car.

I had a PT Cruiser loaned to me while driving that just over a month ago...not the same experience i'm sure. I kept hoping my brakes would last until the bottom.

My brother lived on Maui for about 5 years. He worked on the mountain. He oversaw the construction of one of the big telescopes up there for ... (secret stuff).

Yes, four of us took bikes down the mountain, the weather went from freezing to hot. What a view.

If you really want to scare yourself, take the kamikaze trail down mammoth mountain. My dad did it with street tires, not lugs on a mountain bike...it was funny, he was skidding all the way down. The road is all gravel. Some dudes go down it @ 70 mph, but with the correct tires.

The road to Hana is well known but the road that goes around the northwestern tip of the island(hwy30) beyond the fancy hotels is WAY narrower(one lane for long stretches)and drops straight off to the ocean. If you go be prepared to stop at a little township there(Kahakuloa, just a cluster of houses, looks like a commune) for the best banana bread in the world. You buy it from a driveup roadside stand from a little kid with bare feet. My wife and I go up and get that wonderful banana bread every time we are there.

You can buy mine, leave it here on Maui and drive it up to Haleakala the next time you're here! You can even leave it in my garage!

I was there last year and maybe 10 miles were paved on the Hilo side. It was freaking awesome, too. Now it is ALL paved, I've been told. Well, most of it was paved before, but I'm talking about smooth pavement. The part they paved first is the best part in terms of terrain. Can't wait to go back.
