For those of you doubting he can cover that much ground in this amount of time, I'll put it into perspective... Back in 1998 I drove from San Francisco to Fort Sill, OK in 26 hours (would have been 20 hours or so from L.A. or San Diego). After a day's rest, I drove from Ft. Sill, OK to Allagash, ME in 32 hours. Now many of the map manufacturers brag about covering from "San Diego, CA to Ft. Kent, ME" (right next to Allagash), which happens to be the two furthest towns apart in the continental U.S. With some spirited driving it can be done in 48 hours. Since Randy is taking good driving roads as opposed to highways where you could make the best time, I dunno. But I'm pretty sure he could make it from the gap to Austin in a day if he really wants to... he may get tired and take the highways, but he'll make it. I only wish I had an elise and I'd try it with him ![]() |

Have a great trip, Randy! Godspeed! And, after about 2000 miles of driving, I'd say that your second stop after you get back to San Diego (the first stop to take your wife to the hospital) is to see Shinoo and buy a new set of LSS tires!
But on the flip side, those A048s should be "well scuffed" and ready to autocross on! Bob

hey, randy
assuming you check this thread tonight... after the cherohala and a run down US 11 to US 64 you might save a substantial amount of time by using the interstates to get around chattanooga. here is the route. as US64 skirts the south side of cleveland it eventually combines with US74 just a couple or so miles from I 75. if you get on I75 there and take it into chattanooga (about 18 miles), then follow I24 toward nashville (for about 51 miles) you will save a LOT of time through chattanooga. An advantage of that route is that you will also get to drive a pretty nice winding bit of interstate- very scenic too and then exit on the 2nd exit at the top of the mountain (you will definitetly know the section of I24 when you see it- a steep twisty bit of interstate with the mountain wall on the left and nothing on the right). The exit is at monteagle tn (there are 2 exits, take the 2nd one and go to the left at the end of the off ramp. with a left at that exit you head toward sewanee and then meet US 64 again at winchester TN. the drive back down the other side of the mountain from sewanee is also a very nice twisty drive for a few miles. at the bottom you go through the tiny berg of cowan. watch the radar there. when you get to winchester if you are too beat to continue, rather than taking the turn onto 64 you can go straight ahead and there are a couple acceptable places to stay in winchester. if you have another 45 minutes of drive left in you head into fayetteville as shown on your map. the only place worth recommending to stay in fayetteville is a best western right on 64. if you're a beef eater there is a pretty decent steak place in fayetteville. it is called cattleman's. i am not sure it os open mondays. if not finding a good place in fayetteville is a very tough task. some bad mexican places are as good as it gets. Finding cattleman's is easy- just involves one turn and a half mile drive off 64. if you make it there dinner's on me. (well, not literally...they DO have plates in town.) hopefully i will see you guys either at LCUSA or if i get a late start at the tail of the dragon. at the southern end of the dragon you MUST stop at the crossroads of time to grab a beverage, ogle sport bikes and possibly exotic cars- and grab a souvenir dragon sticker for your car. given your abbreviated schedule i gotta ask...you have a copy of vanishing point? ![]()

Does anyone know if he is using a radar detector, and if so, which one?
As a side note, I've gone from New Orleans to Indianapolis in a day and was able to average 80mph with the Escort Pasport 8500. (The average includes stops) |
