I drove Piuma later in the day, and wound up stuck behind a couple of sportbikers (which kept my speed below normal) and we came upon a cop with his car lit up and blocking the road just before the first switchback. Uh-oh, I thought, as he walked over to my car...
Cop: You were flying around that corner, just flying! Me: Was I? I didn't think.... Cop: Come on, you were flying. You know what the speed limit is? Me: Uhhhh... it's forty on this stretch, right? Cop: Good guess. What did your speedo say? Tell the truth! Me: I didn't see my speedo just then, but it doesn't really matter what it said. If you think I was flying, then I was flying. Cop: Good answer! Try to slow it down a little, okay? Have a nice day. No front plate, big Schroth logos plainly visible on the harness, ChaseCam rig, Valentine V1, wires all over the place..... no problem, no further inquiries. Thank you officer! Turns out he was only blocking traffic for a film crew with a camera truck, otherwise he might have had the time to escalate the incident. But encounters like this are why I drive the canyons solo; if it had been a group of five who were "flying around that corner" he might not have been so mellow. Further down the hill, I came upon five sportbikers coming the other way, and when I patted my hand on my roof in the universal signal that I'd just passed a cop, they all gave me the thumbs-up, pulled a U-turn, and followed me out of there. Heh. Actually, that's the first encounter I've EVER had with cops in the canyons in 18 months. So far, so good...
