Vegas to Denver? Route Recommendations Please

Firstly let me introduce myself . I have an S1 elise 135 Sport which I have owned on an off for 3 years. I live in Scotland and am big Dario Franchitti fan and have been for years. I always try to get to the States at least once or twice a year to watch him race. Of course in 2008 he will be in NASCAR.

My friend and I (he owns an S2 exige) have just booked flights to the Vegas Cup race in March. We will be flying into Vegas on the Thursday before the race and then heading off from there on the Monday to catch a flight back home from Denver on the following Friday.

We are looking to take in some good driving roads and was wondering if any "locals" had any route or place recommendations for the trip.

Unfortunately we wont be hiring an elise and may have to hire a 4x4 SUV because of the time of year. Not really investigated the weather yet - only booked the flights about an hour ago on the spur of the moment But remember there is no car faster than a hire car

I have been to California and Vegas a couple of times and so far all we have in mind is that we would quite like to go round the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The rest is a blank sheet of paper.

If you ever find yourself in Scotland you can find loads of like minded people at www.scottishelises.com

Cheers

Stewart

From Las Vegas, I would consider the North Rim of the Canyon.

Drive the Valley of Fire outside of Las Vegas.

I-15 from Las Vegas, to Utah and I-70, to Denver is a nice bit of road as far as scenery.

I-70 across Colorado in March is questionable - the road was shut down for a full day last week due to avalanche danger. The high elevation on this road is over 10,000 ft, and Colorado's high snow months are March and April. The safest route is probably South to I-40 then to I-25 and North to Denver. About 300 miles longer, but you will be sure to make it. Check the weather, though, as if the weather is good across Colorado, I-70 will be fine. Bad areas are Vail Pass and the approach to Eisenhower tunnel. Also, if you are on I-70 between Eisenhower and Denver (70 miles) between 12noon and about 6pm on Saturday or Sunday you can expect delays in any weather due to skier traffic.

Have fun!

Jerry
