In Lexington, Va., the Washington and Lee University as well as the Virginia Military Institute.
At the former, you can see where all the Lees, including his horse, are buried. Where else would the head of a defeated faction (the Confederacy) be named president of a University? Lots of obscure things in the museum. Note that Robert E. Lee was a descendent of Martha Washington. At the latter, you can see a prestigous state-run military academy. Patton was a graduate. At their museum, you can see Stonewall Jackson's actual horse. That's right. The horse was stuffed and there it is. Remember, you're not in the south; you're in the confederacy. It wasn't the Civil War, it was the War Between the States, sometimes called the War of Yankee Agression. If you're from the Nawth, you'd better get used to that attitude. In Virginia, in a town whose name I forgot, sits Stonewall Jackson's headquarters. There's some stuff about George Washington, who was a land surveyor long before the War. The hq was owned by Mary Tyler Moore's ancestor. He donated it to the cause. I second the Middleburg suggestion. There's not much to do there but its beautiful. Its population is about 650, most of whom are millionaires or even billionares. The Armstrongs and Mellons have residence. Its horse country. They have a training track, where I met the only woman trainer to win the Belmont Stakes, Julie Krone. When I met her, she had a broken collarbone. I also second the battlefields. Its an incredible experience to say "right here, under my right foot, the Civil War was fought and maybe somebody died on this spot."

Middleburg is a nice place indeed. If you go one village further to the West to Upperville, you can enjoy a pleasant atmosphere and food at the "Hunter's Head". We visited Monticello today and came back along the scenic drive in Shenandoah National Park. What a beautiful part of the country that is. Another great day, filled with history and nature. |

Actually we are slowly running out of time. We will meet another LT member (I met him on the 2007 UK tour) on Friday and go to DC. I am looking forward to that, because there is so much to see there. 3 visits in the years before have not been enough ... We will travel to Virginia Beach with the kids on the weekend. After that there will be only little time left. But if I should say something positive: very soon I am going to post photos of the PALS event. ![]() |

His headquarters were in Winchester, Virginia. Winchester is the birthplace of country legend, Patsy Cline, too! Good thing you went to Monticello. That's a must do.

i grew up in richmond and lived in leesburg for 6 years....
so in leesburg get a nice dinner at "lightfoots" old bank converted to nice resturant. you could do that after a day of hitting a few of the local wineries. (nothing epic mind you, but fun non the less) there are few little towns that make great 1/2 day trips - some colonial ruins to the west, annapolis up in maryland, and so on. if you like aerospace - go to the "udvar hazy smithsonian @dulles airport. space shuttle, enola gay, sr-71.... its really fun and cool. you will want to do the touristy stuff in DC, and i would recomend a night out on the town there. hiking in blue ridge, you could spend many days doing that, bed and breakfast's toward charlotsville, and an afternoon and dinner there would not be a bad choice. if you head south (skip va beach!) stop in richmond for a day - drive (or for that matter walk if you like) monument ave. the richmond museum of art is one of the best museums you will ever find, no joke - you could spend a day there. cary town for a littlle shopping / cafe time. then go to shockoe bottom for even better shopping / cafe. some great resturants down there to. onto williamsburg for historical touristy stuff , fun (long) day. - (skip va beach too remember) outer banks is another what? 1.5 / 2 hours south. so.. the outer banks... its not nice per see... but its all about finding a quite spot and relaxin. not a great time of year though... it will be hot and muggy and rather brutal, in fact, all of the mid atlantic will be for the most part! if you decide to go nort baltimore aquarium and water front area, fells point is all good - don;t get lost at night though.... feel free to pm me if you have any questions or anything...
