Transmission Oil change

Well, this has been a really bad day.
I decided to change my gear lube today. Before pulling what I thought was the fill plug, I tested the bolt progressively with my torque wrench until I measured 30 ft/lb to break it loose. Upon closer inspection, I realized that I'd pulled the wrong bolt- so I put it back, and proceeded to tighten to 30 ft/lb. The problem is that although I saw the locktight on the threads I just wasn't thinking (the lock tight rendered my torque measurement meaningless). You can probably guess the rest- Bang! And now half the bolt is in the tranny, and the other half is in my hand.
I can't imagine how this can be fixed other than removing the transmission and opening up the case. The bolt was near the top of the transmission body, meaning that access is limited.
Just shoot me.

Here is a Celica GTS picture:

Here is a walkthrough for a tranny fluid change on a Celica GTS = fundamentally the same:

http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=121104

Notice that one of the pair of bolts holds a clutch hydraulic hose bracket. These MAY possibly be accessory type bolts...meaning that you might be able to leave your busted bolt in place without harm!!! In other words they may turn out to do nothing internal to the gearbox and simply be used to hold external items. I'll see if I can find out more...

In the pic above you can see a large allen head bolt to the left of the indicated fill plug...just past the pair of bolts noted above....this can also be used for fill purposes....and apparently is on some Toyotas where obstructions might make the other location too hard to reach.

Hope things work out for you here.

The hole the broken bolt threads into opens into the transmission (I could hear it suck in air as I removed it). I've marked up Stan's photo to show where the bolt is on the Elise. Note, however, that the transmission in Stan's photo does NOT have the actual bolt- I've marked where it is on the Elise.

another picture, I don't know how this will affect your transmission but looks like something that holds the reverse gear in place.

If I was you I'll call your shop, or Apogee could chime in and let us know how bad that is, Don?

This picture is from the component section page 3 I believe. Doesn't seem to be much info other than this about that bolt other than torque pages, precautions on removing and refitting bolts, etc....

BTW the square by the gasket means that is not re usable so the shop will have to replace that gasket as well.

Edit: The specified torque is: N-m (kgf-cm, ft-lbf)

Note that the reverse idle gear shaft has to be aligned for the bolt to go in. Hopefully your remaining bolt is in place and the shaft didn't move.

Good luck, and don't drive it much, seems like a time bomb.

It doesn't show a pic of that.
It's on the Manual Transaxle Case, on the top of it. I can't find it on any engine picture but it's around this area:

Note the O-Ring needs to be replaced if used.

The replacement bolt didn't arrive on Saturday as hoped, but should be here by tomorrow. In the meanwhile, I've left the car unused. I'm hoping to have this fixed tomorrow. I'll post a message as soon as I have the replacement bolt and the dealer has taken a shot at drilling out the old one.

more information on changing your transmission gear lube

You can find more information on how to change your transmission gear lube on my website.

http://www.sandsmuseum.com//cars/eli...nge/index.html

There are some additional warnings about removing the fill plug while the oil is draining out the drain plug. I was soaked in gear oil and that is not fun!
