Odyssey PC680 battery install, battery brackets

Here's a Pictorial to show how easy it is to swap the stock Batter for an Odyssey PC680.

The first picture show the size difference between the two batteries

Now you can remove the stock battery.

I fabricated a strap out of aluminum just as an extra precaution against the battery shifting.

As a final measure, I wrapped duct tape around the battery and the aluminum strap as another precaution.

When finished, the stock battery case fits right over the PC680.

The whole project took about an hour mostly because I was stopping to take pictures. This modification is real easy and any one can do it.

Here's a pic of the aluminum hold-down:

Can this be used in the Elise, I wonder?

You would have to drill into the clam for that hold down to work. Not a good idea IMHO.

Stan, thanks for noticing my spelling error.

I just boiught this charger for $21 delivered to my house. It says "The only charger on the market today that will fully charge the Optima battery & Odyssey batteries."
I've used it on my completely drained (forgot the light) acid-lead battery in MR2 and it worked fine. Took 3 days to fully charge but I did not mind.

Hmmm.... I bought the charger from Griot's because of the reported incidence of dead batteries... and haven't used it yet... still new in box. I just ordered the Odyssey PC680. Should I get their specific charger? Thanks for any comments.

OK... here's my version!

Just finished my PC680 install.

I got the sheet metal at Home Depot. I used some metal snips to cut it. Very easy. I used a 3/8" drill to make the holes. I drilled the two holes on the sides of the center hole to allow the bracket to fit flush over the two "guide pins."

More:

I added some double-sided foam tape across the top for extra friction, although I highly doubt it's needed. Nevertheless, I couldn't BUDGE the battery after tightening the bracket down. Note that I did not use either of the standard Lotus brackets.

Also, I removed the SAE battery post clamps and directly screwed in the little ring-shaped cable terminals.

If I can do this, anyone can! The worst part was the sweat dripping off my body... It's hot as hell here in S. Florida!

After installing the battery, the Elise started right up without any hesitation. I will put my original battery on a trickle charger / battery manager in the garage to keep as a back-up.

The only thing I noticed was the plastic battery cover that fits over the battery is a bit loose with just the trunk mat snaps holding it down. It has a clip on the back side that normally holds onto the back of the original BIG battery. I don't know if I'll even keep it in there.

BTW, the original battery weighed in at 28 lbs on my digital bathroom scale. The PC 680 weighs in at exactly half that - 14 lbs!
