The 1er feels like a sports car and the 3er feels like a large coupe that goes fast. If you ask me, it's the most "pure" BMW offered right now. The 3 series moved up in every way and lost a great deal of it's charm along the way. This is an ideal replacement for a segment of the market that BMW knew they had moved out of with the 3 series.
I'll try to drive a 135 during BMW's breast cancer (i think) drive. You can pretty much drive all the cars except M cars. Sure, they're different cars and they're about 5k less than the 3, but I have yet to see a 1 series with a sticker of low 30k at any dealer I've been to. I guess it's not a big deal because if I really wanted one, I would just order a jet black 135, with sport pack & xenons and wait 3 months to get it. But since I already have a little coupe, I'll wait to pick up the hot rod sedan aka M3.

Why don't you use your turn signals ,don't BMW's come with them or is it an expensive option ????

That's a whole other gripe with BMW... the stupid a la carte pricing makes me nuts.

I have an '05 CB E46 M3...love it!

I haven't had any issues with it as of yet...it's a superb daily driver, very comfortable, but yet very different when compared to the Lotus.

M3 would make a great daily, not much faster than an elise, but it sux I cant keep up with my friends on the track at 150+

Almost bought this one, but i wanted something to run over curbs with in suburbia instead so I ended up with the RRS
