Question Maserati Spyder... What do you think?

As the Maserati prices began hitting quite low, I started to consider getting a used Maserati... either coupe or convertible. I've found this car on eBay (it says "GranSport" but it's not... probably a mis-post by the seller), and it looks like a great buy for the price. '02 with 13k miles for $43k...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

2002 Maserati Spyder Cambiocorsa, blue/tan w/ 12,950 miles, eBay Buy-It-Now price $42,865.00

eBay Motors: Maserati : GranSport (item 160238831719)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you think? Should I pull the trigger?

Anybody here owned a Maserati before? Your thoughts on the car?

How bad is the Cambriocorsa (F1) system in the car? Pretty jerky...?

Thanks!

I would consider this one at Symbolic Motors, but the car doesn't look like it's in a good condition... Anyone seen this car in person at Symbolic?

2002 Maserati Spyder for Sale

Found some good deals at Expo Motors (Maserati Inventory) as well... Email inquires sent.

My best friend just bought a new Quattroporte with the new, I think, ZF transmission. He used to have an older Quattroporte with the F1 transmission. Even though the F1 is a great piece of machinery, it was a bit jerky. One of his kids used to hate riding in the car because the jerking on automatic shift changes made her carsick. No problems with the new car and transmission.

I personally think these are beautiful cars and the interior style and quality is fantastic. If you are looking at the coupe, I would prefer a manual transmission anyway. Have you driven a car with the F1 transmission? I did so about a year ago and I have to say it didn't bother me at all.

Excellent choice of marque and good luck on the hunt.

Just remember, there's a reason the depreciation rate on Maserati's is so high. The later model cars are better, but they're all money-pits.

I don't mean this to be the typical "do a search" post, but I remember a thread covering this very subject and there was a lot of good input from several people with first-hand experience. A lot of it centered around the Cambiocorsa transmission, what year it was significantly improved and several technical bulletins/updates.

I had an 02 cambio spyder. By *far* the least reliable, most problematic car I've ever owned.

And I've owned 3 Esprits.

When the 4200 came out, I didn't like to look of it at all, but for some reason, I began to really like it. I think it's the Maserati's history that I'm falling for....

I have driven both Maserati 4200 Cambriocorsa Coupe and Maserati Quattroporte before at a Ferrari/Maserati event back in 2005. Yeah, the Cambrio (F1) gearbox was really jerky especially at low speed...

I guess I should look into the GranSport versions. I've found some around $55k in good condition...

Thanks, guys!

The pictures are from a test-drive back in 2005. I actually liked the car, but didn't like the gearbox (Cambriocorsa/F1)... but I hate the manual shifter in the 4200 Coupe -- looks like something from 70's car.

I am going to test-drive a GranSport version to see how much better the gear box is.

You asked what I think so here goes. It's kind of cool to own a Maserati, but the cambiocorsa has reliability problems and from what I hear, you'll be paying Ferrari repair money which makes sense since you'll need it repaired at a Ferrari/Maserati dealer or specialist.

The better choice? 996 cabriolet. Easier in every way. Missing the great V8, though.

From all I have heard and found out, a 2004 or newer Gransport is the way to go. A lot of improvements were made over the years and the interior looks nicer as well.

Cheers!

theres a lot of fuss about the cambiocorsa tranny, my mom has had hers since late 2006 and has had NO issues with it whatsoever, is it just me or are people just paranoid about flappy paddles?

i usually drive the car, and i drive it hard, in normal mode, sport mode and manual mode...no issues, car turns heads everywhere we go, last maintenance only cost $800, the exige cost more than that last time i took it in for service LOL
