My first Cayman experience

Well Ok. I didnt really know they were underpowered like that. Well I guess underpowered is a bad word but I thought they were a lot faster. Had a little test of manhood against one last night. It was just me in the Lotus and 2 guys in the Cayman. I easily pulled about 4 car lengths from 50 - 110. We went a couple more times where they kept it closer but same end result. It was funny when he asked me what engine size I had. I really wanted to say a supercharged 8 just so they wouldnt feel bad lol. They were cool though. But damn, imagine what a 220 - 260 exige would have done to it.

Was is an S. Also the newer S has even more horsepower. And 09 caymen s is supposed to run ~13 flat.

It feels good though huh

Now THAT is funny!

Since I traded my '05 Elise for a '06 Cayman S, I street race twenty or thirty 260 Exige S's a DAY (it's my hobby) and ALWAYS leave them in the DUST!!!

Kidding aside, I've found the diference between the Lotus and Cayman S:
The speed contest is not the factor.
The looks? For me Elise and the Cayman S are STUNNING. But I think the Elise wins by a bit.
Fun to drive? For me, the Elise is much more FUN to drive!!!
Handling? I think it's a tie.
Confidence in driving? Cayman S wins!
Luxury? Obviously Cayman S wins easily!
Build quality? Practicality? Cayman S...

I wish I had enough money to keep BOTH cars!

We went through this over and over.....old stuff

It wasn't an S. Just a standard cayman.. one of the newer ones though. And yes we were street racing through a residential pre-school neighborhood with women and children crossing the street. Dammit... that stroller damaged my front clam. You should have seen it fly though.

I've run against Cayman S's on the track. In a straight line they will pull my Exige S at higher speeds. In braking zones and corners, it's no contest; the Lotus rules. By a lot.

I've driven both the standard Cayman and the S version some time ago. The standard version was definitely not worth the dough, while the S was fun. I'm curious about the more powerful engines...

Cayman S is no joke - This clip is late in the day at Sebring with just instructors and advanced Solo drivers and I was just Katana'd at the time! He pulls pretty hard on the straights but I bettered him in the corners!

The best news for the cayman is it is now available with an LSD. I'd love to have one as a daily but it is way out of my proce range.

I was going around Laguna Seca as a passenger in an Elise. We were going at a moderate pace ( for my sake ). I see a Cayman go flying past us in a straight and kind of rudely cuts us off as if to show off how fast his Cayman is in the corner up to corkscrew. I was like wow that Cayman is really quick ! Just as I said that, he proceeds to do a 180 slide and goes back end off the track into some really thick mud. Luckily I was with a very skilled driver who quickly zipped around the situation as it unfolded in front of us. Next lap around I see he is wheel deep and getting a tow, did not look happy ! A car that is really fast in the straights is great, if you manage to always drive straight....... Stock to stock the Exige S out corners and out brakes the Cayman S, so I would say it is a better race car for the track/autox. Speed is one of 3 very critical parts of a track car, but braking and handling are just as , if not more important on most tracks.

My wife was still considering a Cayman for fun, but I think the idea of a Tiger has killed the Cayman idea. I pointed out that you see about 50 Porches on the way to work, you only ever see a Tiger at classic car shows pretty much. ( Plus the C.A.T. California owners group are a really cool , helpful and genuine gang of friends !)

If you've ever driven a Cayman(S) you'd know it's VERY capable in the handling and braking departments as well, it's no 1990's Mustang. On a wide open road course with some higher speeds I'd bet the current Cayman S with PDK would beat a Exige S stock for stock.

Did not discount that they are very track capable cars, they just have +3,000 lbs of heavy luxury weight to carry around stock, and comparing stock to stock I would say the Exige S would still be a better and faster track car... even against the computer double clutch setup with the CS

Out-corners, yes, largely due to the weight and center of gravity. Out-brakes, no, unless the Cayman driver cooks them, which is possible (though I've never done it) on the non-PCCB setup.

A Cayman S with PCCBs will just about handily rape and pillage an Exige in virtually every situation, given equal driving skill across the two cars.

PDK is trash and offers no advantage over a good gear chucker in an Exige/Elise.

I've discovered that how fast a car feels does not necessarily relate to how fast it actually is.

You can run 993 twin turbo 322x32 2-piece rotors and matching conventional (i.e. non-monobloc) 4 piston Porsche / Brembo calipers on the front of a Cayman S and they really rock! Less expensive to procure than PCCBs (which aren't "all that" anyway IMO) and way less expensive to replace rotors & pads. My buddy hustles his Cayman S with these brakes, LSD and Farnbacher Loles suspension. I can't catch / keep up with him. Bastard.

+1

It's the DRIVER, NOT the CAR!

I'm absolutely AMAZED at how the Elise brakes sooooo late before corners!
It's incredibly LIGHT with superb brakes!
I can't wait to try my Cayman S around the same turns on Streets and Buttonwillow!!!
