PICS-370Z LA Preview

Great event hosted by Edmunds Inside Line. They brought out 3 370Zs. Looks much better in person. As a 350Z owner I think they did a good job updating the car. More power, lighter, stiffer, shorter, wider and the interior is an improved.

Here are my pictures from the event.

Oooh my eyes!!!

This is NOT my cup of tea. Looks like a Tiburon to me. Sorry.

And what's up with the headlights?

The headlights are for when you're driving at night! Sorry, couldn't resist.

I really like it. The "teeth" in the grill seemed odd at first, but they've grown on me. I like the way that they continue the lines of the hood. I just wish that they would have left the huge glommed on warts of doorhandles to die with the old model.

I like it. If you can look past the "fangs" in the front facia and the odd headlight treatment, it has nice lines very much like the original 240Z.

My opinion...

Most Japanese designs are an acquired taste that I just don't have. A few exceptions...the 1st gen NSX, the last gen Rx7, Miatas are fun, 2nd gen MR2. And even in those designs are some heavily barrowed traits.

To me...the doesn't look all that different from the previous car. In some ways I guess that is good -- at least there is continuity and it makes sense to the brand. But I wish car designers (European, American and Asian) would break out of the mold once in a while (I'm thinking like Corvette did with the mid year 60's Stingray).

The worst thing to me about Japanese designs is that they tend to be dated very quickly. Look at an 84 Nissan ZX, Pulsar or other asian designs. Often they start out gaudy but as they age, they get extra gaudy. Sorry...just not my thing. At this point, I couldn't care much if it was more powerful or had some great new engineering development...kinda like the GTR...if I can't get past the design, it must be pretty bad.

QFT on the door handles. They took the least attractive feature of the previous generation and made it even worse. On the other hand, I like the homage to the 240 in the 3/4 view.

Here's what my 3 year old thinks:

I think I'd agree that the new shape is worse than the old one, but at least it's somewhat smaller, and most importantly the finish matches other elements of the car. On the old one they had design elements of the wheels but were in a completely different color and finish than anything else on the car. Made no sense to me.

The wheels are pretty awesome though.

That does look better. Maybe Nissan will do us a favor with a mid-model refresh and change the lights.
