Porsche Macan
Opinions? Reminds me of the Audi Allroad, but it's not clear that the Panamera is selling all that well, so a Panamera with 8 inch ground clearance will do better? Lower than a BMW X6, but higher than a 5-series GT?

I'm not really getting this move into MPVs and SUVs, but I guess if it pays the bills and there is a market for them, why not?
Personally, I'd prefer to see them build a new supercar above the 911, like a resurrection of the 959. |

porsche announce quite some time ago their intention to bring out a "smaller, sportier cayenne"
what i find interesting is that reports claim its still on the cayenne platform. i was expecting a "car based" platform. but honestly i know very little of the toureg platform, maybe it is in fact a beefed up car platform so un-beefing it is a simple exercise. anyways - imo, this will be the "SUV" porsche should have built. smaller, lighter, lower. seems silly for porsche, of all people, to have 2 suv's in their line up... but - whatever!

+1 to what he said.
if these "mainstream cars" retain porsche's core competencies (and i believe they do), and float the costs of porsche doing what they do best. more power to them.

What's that in the promo video? A flash of Stelvio?
At least Porsche seem to know how to properly present their cars...

You're right. I was disappointed with the Carrera GT as it was a half-mil hyper car. Had forgotten about the 918 concept, and didn't know it had gone into full production!
Good for them, will have to check prices and reviews... |

Indeed! Seems it's due for 2013 and will have a UK tag of £672,000...
:That's basically another Carrera GT type limited edition hyper-car for the super rich, and not what I had in mind when I made my first post above. Basically, what I want is something above the 911 in performance, like a Cayman layout for handling, but with a GT3 type powerplant, and a list price no more than the F458, MP4-12C... Can't find anything like that they make at the moment.

That raises an interesting question: how much was the 959 relative to the Ferrari and Lamborghini cars of the day? My impression is that it was about like the Carrera GT and now 918. Heading over to Google...

Ok, in 1987 when the 959 was released other sports/exotic cars cost:
- Porsche 911: $42,000 - Ferrari 328 GTS: $61,000 - Lamborghini Countach: $100,000 - Ferrari Testarosa : $180,000 - Porsche 959: $225,000 - Ferrari F40: $400,000 For reference, the 959 at $225,000 in 1987 equates to right around $500,000 today. So, it looks like the Carrera GT was priced about the same relative to the 911 of the day, maybe a bit more. The F40 was a lot more, and even more than what an Enzo was relatively. The Testarosa was crazy, but probably about what the current V12 F- car is going to be. The 328 was a lot closer to the 911 than the current V8 Ferrari is. Interesting. FWIW, I'd love to see them do exactly what you describe. Basically a hot Cayman GT3 with a bit of a sexy rebody. |

Wow - that explains that then. They've blossomed into a do it all car company. As diverse of a range as GM. I dunno - I always loved 911's but every other car they make are just yawners. Guess if it pays the bills. It just...I dunno.... something aint right about it.
