Rally Car Suggestions
A friend of mine and I are shopping for a car to do ice rally races this winter. AWD or RWD, cheap, reliable, fun... thats about all the requirements for the car. We plan on completely gutting it, slapping some studded tires on and calling it a day. During the "off season" (spring summer) we will also use it for dirt racing. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Simple 95 Subi Impreza RS dirt cheap. No turbo issues to worry about and if you do a head gasket job on them reliable. But like always that's the kicker with any car. It's a pain to dive deep into that motor.

Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 2nd generation 1995-1999
Mitsubishi Eclipse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia all wheel drive, turbo charged, tons of parts available, similar engine to an Evo An Evo is not cheap to maintain if you plan on beating on it a lot...

More like $150,000-175,000, it's a Group N car
---- Aforementioned Subaru Impreza RS would be your best bet. Mitsubishi Eclipse might be ok, but they tend to break a lot in rally If you want to go RWD, an old RX-7, Corolla, Datsun 510, etc

All right C5, let's see your car mate, and if it's anything short of a Zonda, "Imma let you finish, but Zygotesoup had one of the most realistic ideas of all time"

90-93 Celica GT-Four/Alltrac if you can find one. I have two. Very bomb proof, very strong engine. They generally go for 5-6k for a fairly sound one. Toss another 4-5k into it and you've got a reliable 300 at the wheels.
Very fun car. |

Merkur XR4Ti. Easy to work on, 2.3L turbo, RWD. easily found in the sub $4k range. (By easily I mean the car itself is hard to find... but generally $1000-3500)
Also easy to get 300whp for under $1k

I'd go for a 1st gen Talon/Eclipse turbo. Mine made it to 340,000 kms and 18 years. I really beat on it in my 20s, but I treated the turbo well. I could put 3/4 boost on the ground in snow/slush with only V-rated all-seasons. Totally predictable in every motion at every traction level - I would rally that car ANY day!
