RIP: Saturn

Looks like the deal fell through with Penske. I wonder if anyone else will go for it or GM just wants it to die to stave off competition.

GM kills Saturn after Penske ends deal - Sep. 30, 2009

Will Penske buy the Aura (manufactured by Opel, an Ex GM company) from the new Canadian owners of Opel?

Not that I am a Saturn fan..but just a moment there was a glimmer of hope for that division.

man that is sad news...

i have a 95 SW2, blue-black saturn wagon, 201,000 miles and still runnin strong! kinda like a pick up truck but with a roof. hauls a lot of stuff. been paid off for since 98!!!

i was lookin at the Astra a year ago, made by opel and is a decent sporty small wagon. glad i didn't get it, 'specially if parts might be rare.

of the GM brands, saturn was an underdog, but probably the better division.

i was aiming for 300,000 miles on my SW2, hopefully i can still get parts ...

The Aura is not manufactured by Opel, I believe it is built in Kansas City. Only the Astra is manufactured by Opel.

The Aura is based on an Opel platform, along with the Pontiac G6 and Chevy Malibu.

IMHO Saturn was another GM marketing experiment where they tried to differentiate the brand on the basis of the business model and customer buying experience and NOT on product. I'm sorry, but where in the four Ps of marketing does it say Business Model is a "P"????

Cheers,
Kiyoshi

Gotta wonder whether this has the UAW's fingerprints on this. What's to say they didn't deep-six it because Penske didn't want to play ball or give in to their demands. After all, they have an ownership interest in GM.

Too bad. Saturn was a good company. Cars were boring though.

But I did like the new convertible. Skyvue? or something like that.

Were they still doing the "no haggle pricing" scheme?

Though I'd love to claim it, I can't. Jalopnik created this masterpiece.

...behold the rapture...
...in all seriousness, saturn had quite the following in its early days, and the satire isn't too far off the mark...strangely, though, watching through this episode again for the first time since it originally aired, i'm struck by how much better early nineties sitcoms seemed at the time than today in retrospect...
