Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe Could Sell for EIGHT figures?!!

Mecum is selling a 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe (CSX2601) at auction in May. They estimate it will sell for well into EIGHT figures.

Is that possible? I remember the Ferrari 250 TR that was expected to do the same. I know they are rare, but in this economy....wow.

A very rare car with substantial racing provenance (wins at Reims and Monza, IIRC)...even in today's world, it still represents an item of historical interest and value.

I think it will reach that... people buying this type of car are not too affected by the current economy.

I could see it selling for that. I believe there are only six of those cars in existence.

edit: duh per the article there are only 6 around.

Correct. According to SAAC's 2008 World Registry of Cobras and GT40's:

  • CSX2287: Dr. Fred Simeone - Philadelphia, PA (2005)
  • CSX2299: Larry Miller - Utah (2003) NOTE: Larry, owner of the Utah Jazz, passed away late last week
  • CSX2300: Christian Glasel - Switzerland (2005)
  • CSX2601: Bernard Carl - Shouthampton, NY (2004) NOTE: Auto referenced here.
  • CSX2602: Kazuo Maruyama - Japan (1995)

I've seen Miller's Shelby Daytona Coupe in the Shelby museum in Gunbarrel CO.
There are also a bunch of Ford GT40 race cars and other Cobras and GT350's...

I can see it selling for eight figures, probably to a Morgan Stanley banker whose bonus money came from the bailout funds.

Some people (a very small minority, admittedly) are swimming in money these days. They have to spend it on something. Hell, a 1911 Matisse painting just sold for over 40 million.

There were only 6 built and all 6 still exist. That is pretty good for a 60's race car.

I read somewhere else that Bob Bondurant (driver of CSX2601 during the day) was offered the car for $5,500 way back when. He apparently regrets not buying it! Talk about a return on your investment...
