Toyota FT-86 Concept to Deliver "Racecar-like" Handling

Tokyo Preview: Stunning Toyota FT-86 Concept Delivers “Racecar-like” Handling : Auto News

Quote:
Until today, if someone asked you what the best looking Toyota from the past decade was, you’d have a tough time thinking something up. As of today, the answer is the FT-86 Concept, which is set to officially debut at the Tokyo Auto Show later this month.

The name FT-86 brings together Toyota’s past and future, with the “FT” coming from the FT-HS hybrid concept from a few years back, while the “86″ is donated from the AE-86, a small rear-drive, two-door Corolla-based sports car (called the Hachi-Roku), made famous by drifters.

Other than the design of the car (which is certainly impressive with plenty of Lexs LF-A inspired goodness), we don’t know a lot about the FT-86 concept yet.

What we do know is that it will be light weight, with “racecar-like handling” and be powered by a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine. While Toyota hasn’t said as much, this is most likely donated from the boxer-engine experts at Subaru – meaning that the FT-86 is the mysterious Toyobaru.

Toyota hasn’t said as much, but you can be certain this concept car is headed for production in the very near future.

Lexus LF-A rip off...well it's still a Toyota afterall...maybe a watered-down LF-A.

It's the midget version of the Lexus IS Coupe/Convertible.

I'm just happy that Toyota has a RWD car again..... but if I could change it? I'd say Toyota make it more boxy like the original AE86... just give the AE86 a styling update don't go with a crazy new design.

LOL.. the rsx has larger displacement motor too (although I'm sure they'll squeeze a little more than 220 hp out of this new concept)

I hope they decide to produce it and give LOTS of options. That's a lot of IF's : (

I would want:

RWD
2JZ or similar
Throaty V6
4cyl Turbo

Some form of forced induction would be nice.

You missed the "'s around it. I was pointing out the obvious question owners will get asked. Kinda like "Is that a corvette/viper/whatever" lotus owners get asked.

I like it. The whole idea of a rwd small boxer motor 4 cylinder car appeals to me. Now if they slap a turbo on it that would be sweet. I am probably not in the market, but I hope to see these around.

What's wrong with the motor? It's basically going to be a EJ20 Subaru WRX setup, plenty good for the car if it ends up under 3,000 lbs.

Pay no attention to him. He owned an Elise about six cars ago and razzes us about the Toyotas we all drive.

Hey, Mike. You need to update your signature. That ZO6 was literally three cars ago.

hmm... I like it. It's not quirky enough to remind me of my old AE86 though... I still miss that car.

Knowing Toyota they'll just make it bland and lame before it comes to market... it'll end up as another FWD econobox with a crappy name and a bunch of Transformers references to sell it to the under 20 crowd.

... and if not, I'd consider buying one
