I've an 03 TT 225 as my daily driver since new and it's the perfect complement to the Elise. Yeah it now feels slower and a little loose vs the Elise and when I drove one of the first 350zs right after I bought it the z felt crisper but not faster. The TT is a perfect comfortable, all weather mile muncher and really can't see any other comparable sports(y) car that can be used year round in snowy areas.
It's also very practical especially with the back seats down, I've gotten more 'stuff' in there than in my wifes A4.... In over six years I've also had no issues with it besides a window motor when it was a few months old. The only issues with them are the timing belt (but as Macdady said, just make sure they're changed and the new pulley fitted), the instrument panel goes bad (class action suit to replace them, mine's been fine) and the windows sometimes don't go up on their own as they are frameless and get a little tight so the anti trap device makes them go down, however a little lube fixes it. And that's about it. Just don't expect the last word in driving dynamics and it'll reward you and put a smile on your face every day. I still look back at it when walking away from it like I do with the Elise. Oh and it's really great on gas and they're easy to tune

Cheapest tune is an ECU upgarde which can start around $500. 383hp turbo kit = $6,899
Here's some resources: APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles. and GIAC - Automotive Performance Software Tuning

yes, very easy to chip. Just don't get the APR demo version installed on your car. It's suppsoe to reset back to default ESU settings, but I dont' think it quiet does and causes issues. When you get the real thing though, it's fine.
And it's not really the timing belts that are the issue. It's the water pulley that sucks. Stock uses a plastic impellar which falls apart and explodes. If you do get it changed, buy an after market kit that has a metal impellar. And like Cornbeef said, it has a roomy back. I get sets of skis, my white water kayak, bikes, where I can't take the front wheel off (cannondale lefty) all in the back of my TT. Couldn't do that in my brother 3 series BMW or even my mothers Jaguar.

You can get one small adult in there sideways, or two kids (under 10).
I had a 225HP TT for a couple of years and had no issues at all. Not a Lotus, but a good car nonetheless. Would recommend a 2002 or newer.

im 6'4 and have driven four up before, the two in the back were vertically challenged and were, lets say, loosened up after a few beverages (why does the designated driver have the smallest car came up more than one ). we were fine but no-one was comfortable and thankfully it was a very short drive. i've had a larger individual in there sideways once also, (again when he tried sober he couldn't fit ). when i drive the a4 there is no room behind me for a passenger crazyeyes so that should give you an idea of why i'm probably not the best to comment on passengers but i'd say small people (or kids) can sit reasonably comfortable behind normal sized people for shortish periods without issue. that said the tt back seat basically is a really nice leather parcel shelf.

There's lots of room in the MKII TT. See:

I bought my 2001 TT Quattro (225hp) in late 2000 and it's been my driver car ever since. It's fun, fairly practical (you can get a lot of cargo in the back, especially with the rear seats folded down) and I still love the styling (a lot more than I like the current model TTs). I tell people it's my practical car (as compared to my Lotuses).
The only real problem I can remember having with was my brake light switch, which was a pretty easy fix (under warranty). Oh, and the chime for when you open the door with the lights on stopped working. I'm planning to take good care of my TT and drive it for many years to come! |
