To all people with a K&N Intake - HELP

57-0597 - K&N 57i Series Kits, 57i International Intake Kit
57A-6034 - K&N Intake Kits, Performance Intake Kit

Those are the 2 intakes made for an 05' lotus elise. Which one can I be sure will be more reliable and easier to install.

And, would a re-tune/ECU flash be potentially also required (or useful) with this?

Without an ECU re-flash, specifically tuned to the change in MAF, doesn't the stock ECU just "re-learn" this, in some cases even REDUCING effectiveness/horsepower? Seems like scores of other threads at least tend to indicate this.

So another short question then would be - why bother?

It seems like their should be a repository of ecu flashes available for common mods without everyone having to take their car to a dyno. Curious what it costs to have your car dyno'd and reflashed since I have never done it (and dont even know if can be done here in Chicago--we have dynos but no lotus ecu programmer person that I know of).

Anyone actually buy one of these yet? If so, what are your thoughts?

No comments on the K&N intake kit? I'll post mine & photos once I get it installed.

I'm really curious to hear what your thoughts are about this kit!

It looks like one of the most thought-out intake kits I've seen for the Elise so far.

*edit* I'm actually thinking about just picking one of these up. I see it online for under $200!

I just placed an order through Jegs. I'll post photos and comments once installed. I haven't driven my car since early November, so it may be a couple of months before I get it out on the road.

I am also interested to hear how this works out. I tried contacting K&N, but they were very coy about making any claims, saying that the kit was`developed in the UK and they would not even warrant that it would fit Fed cars! Sounds like they are just steering clear of any clash with the emissions police...
So I tried posting on SELOC and had one reply from an owner who thought it might have added a few bhp, but nothing objective.
So I'm no further ahead. I'm not convinced I want to fit this just for the noise....but as mentioned above, it does seem to have promise.
There must be some on the road with ET members...what's the word ladies and gents?

Previously posted question to Charlie in My tuning stuff thread:
Do you know anyone using the K&N intake? If you were using your +8hp tune, would you add this intake?

Charliex: Yeah we use it on a lot of cars, it'll be fine.

OK - here's some feedback from K&N UK. THey claim that the kit resulted in a 9HP gain at 7,500rpm on the car they used. Don't know if this was stock - I will enquire, but this sounds promising.

Without a reflash of your ECU by someone like CharlieX for your specific application, those HP gains would not remain, from my understanding.

It came in the mail today, but sadly my Elise is in storage until March.

I was hoping that by having the air sensor incorporated in the CAI this might not happen, but I confess to complete ignorance on the subject.

CharlieX....your thoughts please?

The k&n filter matches the factory airbox, we've not found any issues with it.

Do you think the K&N UK claims of a 9hp gain at 7,500rpm are reasonable - and sustained?

I haven't seen the specifics , but on the FI car its not an unreasonable claim.

K&N UK have confirmed they used a stock Elise and that there is no degradation of performance due to the ECUI adapting to the CAI
