BOE Racing exhaust now available from Blackwatch Racing

Beyond Original Equipment(BOE) Fabrication and Blackwatch Racing introduce the first true racing exhaust for the Lotus Elise and Exige (And you can live with it every day!)

Design:The dimensions were tested extensively with many different combinations of silencer diameter, core diameter, length, and packing material consistency to get great power, great sound, and kill the annoying drone present in so many exhausts including the factory and stage II systems.

Construction:
All 304 Stainless construction. Mandrel bent exit pipe and 100% TIG welded. 2.5" straight-through design reduces back pressure to support high power applications. These exhausts have been tested on cars with 320HP both on and off the race track!

Composition and History:
These systems are designed specifically for the Lotus Elise/Exige platform by BOE and Coast Fabrication working in concert. Coast Fab is the culmination of the legendary Dan Gurney race team (who coincidentally was a winning Lotus team from the 60’s).
More recently, these mufflers were on the Brumos car that won Daytona 24 hour this year and the winning Sun Trust car in 2005 of the prototype cars. The only modern podium car they're not on is the Ganassi car, as they have their own exhaust. Just about everyone else uses Coast. They're THAT GOOD. You'll find pics of these mufflers glowing red hot and they'll stay that way for the whole race. The same muffler will often get used for 3, 4, or 5 races. Most track day enthusiasts don't come even close to working the exhaust that hard in years worth of use...

Current exhausts on the market all use fiberglass packing and most are NOT rebuildable. Fiberglass will simply burn up and blow-out over time with the ultra short exhaust tracts of the Elise/Exige, a very short time if you track your car! You’re then left with a loud exhaust that actually robs power and isn’t rebuildable!
In the “Quarter-Stick” we use 100% stainless-steel packing, which is far more heat resistant and much longer lasting than fiberglass. In the quieter “Silent Touch” version we use a stainless/fiberglass hybrid that provides much higher heat tolerance than pure fiberglass, but maintains a very light weight. Both are rebuildable.

Mounting:Mounted using BOE’s proprietary hollow stainless steel mounting rod system. This rod mounts in the stock exhaust hangers. Through several trials, we've arrived at just the right amount of flex (compared to other rigid systems on the market), which allows the exhaust to move, eliminating the stress cracking that has plagued other exhausts. Additionally, there are provisions in the mounting system to reduce the chances of the exhaust “walking” to the passenger side of the vehicle—another problem many other systems are dealing with today. The system is complete with 2 stainless T-bolt clamps for the strongest connection to the factory U-bend and the attachment of the tip. A lightweight, angle cut exhaust tip is provided for both good looks and further sound attenuation. With the T-bolt clamp, not only can the angle of the tip be fine-tuned, but a different tip could be attached for different looks or directing sound away from those pesky sound stations!

Rebuildable:
Unlike any other Lotus exhaust on the market, The Silent Touch and Quarter-Stick are both rebuildable. After a couple of seasons of hard racing, you can undo the end cap and rebuild the exhaust with an inexpensive rebuild kit.

Weight:

Critical to any racer, especially the Lotus owner. These are the lightest exhausts on the market for the Lotus: Including all the clamps, mounting rod, tip and silencer, The Quarter-Stick weighs in at just over 8lbs! The silent touch only a bit over 11lbs!

Sound:Now we get to the best part! These exhausts were extensively tested for great sound as well as power production.

Silent Touch:
Off-cam it has a deeper, richer sound than stock and about the same volume. No drone. On-cam a bit louder than stock, more aggressive, but deeper, crisper, and with no drone. Very liveable on a day-to-day basis. Customers tell us its about a loud as their old 8" exhaust, but deeper tone.

Quarter-Stick(As in "quarter stick" of dynamite):
No drone and moderate volume at idle. Several folks have commented it is quieter than stage 2 around town(due to lack of drone) Aggressive, but not raspy off-CAM. On-CAM description best taken from bystanders: "Sounds like a Formula 1 car!", "Crisp and not raspy", and our favorite: "Bad-Ass!!!!"

Currently both exhaust are a "high exit" which require removing part of the heat shielding and either trimming or removing one of the rear side panels. We recommend the Von Hep license plate bracket that replaces the rear panel.

Prices for QuarterStick and the Silent Touch are $645 and $695 respectively.

Installed mine today!

Another great product via Blackwatch (and BOE).

I got the loud version. It's nice and loud when on the gas but pretty quite (stealth) at lower rpm.

I now have sound that matches my HP.

No hideous drone either. The sound is very nice.

Pix to follow.

I couldn't be happier with the small unit (the Quarter Stick) I've been running lately. Sound is not an issue as the tracks I run on do not have sound limits (insert politacal comment here).

There should be an option of an oversized polished tip

Looks like Sector's aluminum diffuser.

I'm really starting to like it best of all the stuff out there.

Shay-

Ofcourse we did

The problem is the sound wasn't any good at the length of can that could be centered. After trying differnt combinations, we came to the longer version which cannot be centered. Function over form, my friend

Looks like a tighter radius on the exit pipe would allow it to center, is that not possible? The pipe sure does look loooooong.

Ask DarkSol to post a picture of the beautiful welded 90 degree bend on the muffler I sold him, short and cool looking.

Edit, found one of my old pictures.

I hear ya, but Loooooong is where it's at It really did make a big difference in sound. All these systems on the market either sound like rice burners or drone once they're broken in. I even found the same thing with these when using conventional lengths, which is why I started playing with the length and can diameter. It makes a big difference in sound attenuation

Unfortunately, the areaP cans like Dark purchased from you burn out in literally ONE track session at our power levels (his included is in VERY sad shape). His and all 5 of mine quite literally melted down. The aluminum end caps turn to mush and warp to no end, and the packing shoots out the tail pipe making the can get so hot that the rubber insulators on the hangers melt down... Again, one track session is all it takes on those... Kind of a bad deal really... So they may be short and cool looking, but they're also no good for a track car with 275+whp... A street car or stock power on the track and they seem to do fine... I've gotten to know the family that owns areaP pretty well since I've purchased so many mufflers of theirs and tried different configs. They're good people and a good company-- However, they just don't have the right product for a higher whp track car (Afterall their specialty is motorcycles)...

Cheers,

Phil

Yep, true with the AreaP muffler - extremely light (mine/David's has a Ti shell) and the owner is a good guy. David did say that his is being rebuilt at AreaP now and hopefully it will last a bit longer.

A shorter 90 outlet makes that much a difference with sound, I wouldn't have thought it would.

Unfortunately, the insulation AeaP is putting in the can won't help Darksol. All of mine this year have had that mod and they still melt to the ground... I've got one in the shop right now that is double insulated and looks like it's been in a house fire after just 2 sessions Ill be repalcing it with a quarter stick...

The tip is only part of it. An angled tip sounds notably different than a straight tip. If you lokk at Serge's exhaust, he has the 90 degree tip. It was one of the systems I used for R&D. It works, and sounds very good, but the angled tip sounds just that much better. It takes away the harshness of the "popping" sound --and - MAY even flow better... So yes, a tight tip would allow centering of the can more, but the whole package comes together better with the it offset...

A couple more details, to center the can like I had it on some of my first attempts, I had to add length to the entry pipe. The requires either weldling or clamps. Either add up to about a pound, as I found, and add cost. At the end of the day, a decision had to be made. Function and value outways form in my mind... Subjectively, if you stand 10 feet back to take in the whole car, the system looks quite hansome and natural, IMO... I've rec'd several compliments on mine, so to each their own

I've seen and dealt with a lot of systems now, and this is the best thing going hands down for anyone that's really driving their car hard and/or just wants a good sounding system that's extremely light weight (lightest that I've seen that doesn't melt to the ground)...

Later,

PV

Phil, looks good !

I am considering the Silent Touch / 8 inch for my "06 Exige and going with the Von Hep panel eliminator. I have tracked my car a number of times and have come to appreciate the functional aspects of the naked look.

Though, I am toying with the idea of just modding the right side of the OEM heat shield and right rear OEM panel to accommodate the exhaust exit...to keep the car's appearance as stock as possible. I live in a metro area with a lot of WRXs, Evos, common ricers and many attentive cops).

It looks like - from the pictures - that the Silent Touch's can has a lot of girth and may not fit behind the OEM rear panel and heat shield. Do you know if it will fit in the OEM heat shield enclosure without touching the rear piece (promoting buzzing, vibrations, and heat transfer)?

Thanks.

Greg

I noticed you are sticking with the 2.5" size for supercharged cars. There are some guys out there running custom 3" set-ups.

Is that too little back pressure? Or is the 2.5 size more of a noise control thing?

Thanks -
