Decat Pipe Question

can i install the decat without either of the o2 sensors? I don't care about the CEL, but want to make sure the car will still run good.

It will need the first O2 sesnsor installed, this is what the ECU uses to monitor the combustion process and adjusts the fuel/air ratios accordingly. The second O2 is just used to monitor cat efficiency and could be left out (triggering the MIL/CEL of course). Now being that this is a decat you are talking about, the primary O2 sensor could be installed in either bung to get its readings (I saw on the other thread that one of the bungs was damaged).

it's that my used decat pipe has both of the o2 bungs threads totally stripped and unusable...so i was thinking of just threading a larger size bolt into it

Can the bungs be re-tapped, or use thread inserts to repair them?

That sucks that it is both... you can take it to an exhaust shop and get them to weld in new bungs, but this is probably a stainless decat and I am not sure if they will have stainless bungs. I would just use Helicoils. I think it is a 18/1.5 thread (same as spark plug). Helicoils work great and you should be able to get a great fix using them (particularly if the stripped bungs are stainless).

I just measured the threads to make sure I was correct. The threads are 18/1.5 which is a common spark plug size, so most any auto parts store should have a spark plug rethread kit in that size. I prefer the Helicoil, but most any should do.

Actually, what am I saying??? This is a very hard thing to fix and will cost lots of money... instead you should just ship it to me so you don't have to deal with it anymore!!!

lol, the problem is that it was so badly crossthreaded that there is no "meat" left after i retapped it. Getting two new bungs and an exhaust shop to weld... i might as well have brought a new unit... OH wells...

Did you just try to re-tap them (I could see where that wouldn't work), or did you drill and re-tap for one of the threaded inserts?
