Missing intake snorkel!

Yesterday, I did some maintenance on my car in preparation for next weeks autoX (new engine oil, new tranny oil, new air filter, etc). There are 2 very important things I noticed when I replaced the air filter:

1) I did not have an intake snorkel. You know, the snail looking thing in the picture below (thanks Stan for the pic).

2) My filter, at 12,000 miles and nearly 1 year was, for the most part, CLEAN! While it was dusty, it lacked the usual rocks, chunks of dirt, bugs, water stains, etc that are typical when you remove the air filter! It is the ORIGINAL air filter...never been replaced until yesterday.

From what I can tell, my car did not come with the snorkel. When piecing together my car, they must have forgotten it There is no sign of it being there, from how it looks inside the well to the perfectly clean appearance of the air filter. It could not possibly fall out of that area.

So has anyone ever noticed a missing snorkel? I don't think I have lost any performance without it! In fact, I probably have gained some advantage since my filter has remained unclogged! Any thoughts?

Sounds like it's time for a Reverie cold air intake with side scoops. Standard snail intake looks pretty inefficient to me. I lost my snorkel once, down at Kamaole Beach Park, but that's a different story altogether.

Lillie,you have a rare female Elise(no "snorkel")

or maybe they lost it at your 1000 mile service, actually could it be sitting on top of the fender liner?

You made me look... mine has a snorkel. My guess would be that the intake air is slightly cooler (better, obviously) with the snorkel. Without may may be very slightly less restrictive but, because the air is pulled from closer to the engine, it would be warmer. Again, all my best guess....
