Is there an exhaust for elise/exige that sounds as good as a supercar?
I loved how stock lambos and ferraris sound. Which exhaust (if any) for the elise/exige would be the closest to getting just that beautiful tone that isnt just super loud but just right?

Ya bro, its common sense. The Lotus is a 4 cylinder car, you cant really make it sound like a Lambo.

Straight pipe with no resonator. Problem solved.

Ok I see. I was never too much into exhausts so I didnt know what all played a factor into how your exhaust sounds. Im not comparing the lotus' to lambos or ferraris, im just saying that I love how they sound. Well what would you recommend considering that im going for the best "sounding" (not loudest) exhaust that I can get for the elise/exige?

Give up on a 12-cylinder sound and embrace the screaming four-cylinder sound. That said, you want to shoot for the "sport-bike on steroids" sound.
I recommend CAI, sport-cat and single-tip exhaust. I have ForcedFed intake, Larini cat, Arqray single tip exhaust. Doesn't sound like a Ferrari, but it has a uniquely mean (and very loud) sound.

Has anyone ever heard the Celica GTS's at Danny McKeever's "Streets of Willow" school? (Similar engine as the Lotus.)
Those have the closest "Lambo" like sound that I have ever heard coming from that engine. They have race headers and straight pipes. Makes an incredible noise! .

My Lotus hates my bike.

Yep, definitely asking too much of a 4-cylinder to impersonate a V8 (Ferrari) or a V10 (Lambo).
I suspect that if you are obssessing over this sound, you've made the wrong purchase. Save your pennies and buy the real McCoy. BTW, Ferraris sound better than Lambos to me

(the "twin" inner and outter cyl on the 2zz are on the same "end" / different stroke - all 4 are on the same 180 plan) - did that make any sense the way i wrote that???!?! so then actaully the Elise i a lot like 1 bank of a ferrari then with its "flat crank" ... jus as a point of trivia - how many current production ferraris have a "flat crank" ?

Darksol has a great sounding Elise. It isn't a Lambo, but it sounds really good.
I think he went Decat and and exhaust combo, but you'll have to ask him.

This is as close as I got my car to sounding like one:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kiygifRBmOc&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kiygifRBmOc&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> I'll have it up for sale next weekend as I'm happier with the quieter Larini. The Larini also sounds more exotic at part throttle conditions. |

That sounds really good. Of course it could be just crazy loud if I was there but sounded good to me. I think the best sounded exhaust I have heard (non exotics and other really expensive) is surprisingly on the 350z/G35/Infiniti truck... I like the way those sound. They have a beautiful tone. |

Sounds good.
Headers, decat & single tip exhaust seem to be the best way to improve the exhaust note. .

Just the V8's, the the 430 derivatives (couple, spider, Scuderia). Maserati has the same basic engine in their cars, and the new Alfa too. I thought I heard that the Esprit V8 was flat-crank??? I've never heard one. You have to embrace what you have and make the most of it. The worst thing about having a 4 cylinder is all the losers with coffee can fart boxes that just ruin it for us. I will freely admit that most of the reason I have an S is because the supercharger sounds better. I have had the privaledge of owning a 355 (awesome flat crank sound) and a 512 TR (V12 symphony). From the outside, the 355 was like a damn F1 car. From the inside, well, it really didn't sound much different than the Lotus (a flat crank V8 actually sounds more like an inline 4 than it does a regular V8). It is clear that Ferrari has gotten better over time of tuning the insulation to bring in the good sounds of the exhaust (the 360 and 430 sound better in the car). Now the V12 - you ain't gonna touch that without adding cylinders. At all rpms, it's like an orchestra! (actually, the 12 has a very distinct harmonic...) God I miss that sound. But overall, I would not trade back. |
