I feel like I should be OK. Hopefully I didn't previously (before I had the inserts) crack or weaken the area around the Cat. Haven't noticed any soot.

Hot days at thunderhill over this summer still have me worried, though.
How did the engine mount inserts affect the vibration in idle and under light load? My car is still a daily driver and I don't want any major additional rattles.

BTW, I also have the FF engine damper.

Also, I noticed already due to the stock exhaust, a very small area about the size of a dime seems to have been melted through my diffuser prior to the header install. Should I be concerned about melting/fire and excessive heat. Keep in mind that I don't plan on tracking my car, at least not right now.
They said they could wrap the header, which may be the route to go, but I wish they would have brought this to my attention sooner. I am not going to be real pleased to have to pay more money to someone to do work that could have been done in the first place. There goes another hundred$$$.

Like to hear you all's input

Andy
Yes that sounds correct.

The Weapon R header also doesn't have a flex joint in there so it's really important to upgrade your motor mounts to try to prolong it's life.

Wrapping will help but won't be nearly as effective as a proper coating. If you're concerned about heat I would probably do it if I were you.

*edit* The motor mounts made a noticeable difference (both positive and negative) for me. Since it's not my DD I love them. It's a little annoying with the extra vibration (especially when taking off from a stop) but nothing that's deal-breaking IMO.

The vibration is noticable a little bit, but doesn't bother me. It may bother some people, but I would think if you drive a lotus, you wouldn't care since you put up with so much other stuff. Hop in my car sometime and see for yourself

Bane,

I am really interested in getting this type of coating. What is the theory behind it -- how does it keep things cooler? It is really just a ceramic coating, right? Does it just keep the heat in the system until it is expellled via the exhaust instead of letting it dissipate en route?

My boot used to get so hot with the stock header that I could barely touch the carpet buttons in there.

Now it was cool to the touch after a track day and after sitting in traffic in 90 degree heat.

This applies to all exhaust systems so even if you aren't using my setup I highly recommend the coating...

Where did you get this coating?

Lotusland: You are correct on the theory of operation. It's a ceramic coating on both the inside and the outside of the piping allowing the gases to stay as hot as possible inside the piping.

tvacc: I offer this coating on the PPE headers. I'm debating not even making it optional anymore as it's proven to be well worth the added cost. It's made by a company called N-coat/HPC (nCoat, Inc. Innovating the Next Generation of Coating Technologies). They are local and do some of the best coating work I've ever seen.

I asked because I have a Caterham Seven and I had the headers coated by a company south of Rochester NY. ()name not necessay as I dont wantt to give them negative pubicity...as I like the guys) It was a ceramic coating and was supposed to be cooler but I really did not see any difference. Of course it would have to be possible to remove the current coating by some means. I am not going to buy another set of $400 headers to do this.

Just wanted to know if it it was possible...and the cost.

As far as I know, the coating is a permanent process. It actually bonds to the metal so you can't easily remove it.

This is getting a little off topic though... PM me if you want more information about the coating.

Back on to the original topic: Another side benefit of the coating is that it adds a mil or two of material to the header, making the slip joint a much tighter fit

Found my exhaust clamp loose after Barber!

Just for the sake of it everyone should go under the car and see if the exhaust can be slid fore and aft by hand. Or just check the clamp if your not sure by taking off the diffuser. It could save your car and or your life!

I'd like to introduce the Bane/PPE MOAC (Mother Of All Clamps):

It'll fit right onto one of our headers but requires a little trimming of the stock cat heat shield. This is the best solution we could come up with short of installing proper v-bands for our questionable slip fit exhaust systems...

Official information will be in another thread. I just wanted to post the teaser pic here so people know they have a few options!

... and yes that's a prototype 3" muffler that'll bolt right up to your factory exhaust system

The clamp that arrived with my Larini 8" broke last week. It performed fairly well for about a year, but it always had a small leak. I got the s111 accuseal clamp, but haven't installed it yet.
Where did you find that monster clamp?

I got the one I used from summitracing.com

Dynomax Performance 33226 - Dynomax Lap-Joint Band Clamps – SummitRacing.com

I dont know if that is the correct size, I just did a quick search on "clamps" at Summit

I bought one for my Seven..have not put it on the Elise yet.

Here are some hints that the weld on your catalytic converter is about to crack apart:

1) Your exhaust sounds just a little louder than usual...
2) Your driver's side bumperette starts melting...
3) Your clam catches on fire...

Luckily I didn't quite experience #3...

Yes, and my small clamp on my 2bular exhaust also failed - actually, the nut cracked in half.

I was under the car for hours before the last track day (new brakes and rotors, replaced the gear oil, checked fastener torques, etc)... and I'm pretty sure that I looked over the exhaust... but now that I know specifically what to look for, I'll definitely take a more careful look at that weld in the future. Ryan (R3 Motorsports) was generous enough to lend me a spare cat for the event. And it seems that Lotus is standing up and I will get a new cat under warranty.

I think I spent more time wrenching than driving, but at least I made the TT, and drove the car home!

I finally installed the s111 accuseal slip-fit clamp. It is a monster clamp, with a thick band and huge bolt. I torqued it down to 35 ft/lbs no problem. I comparison the Larini clamp looks like a ziptie.

Highly recommended!
