To Daily or NOT to Daily...
Well as the subject states... this is my first post here and I read a couple of horror stories about the reliability of the exiges but for some reason I still for some reason think that it's worth a shot, I mean these are Toyota power plants right?!
Here is my situation... I'm under 30 years of age, I have an Acura (not an integra) and I'm on my 5th tranny. Yes that's right, 5th tranny... and yes I know some one out there is saying "it must be user error", it's not, the car that I have (cl type S) is known for tranny problems. Here is what I was thinking of doing... 1. Get an Exige 2. Get a Toyota econo car I would use the econo car about 2-3 days a week and the exige for the rest of the time... Would an exige hold up to daily/almost daily use? I'm in love with the exige, I want it like a crack head wants crack, but I'm also on a limited budget, I could wait, but have you seen what a crack head looks like when you ask him to wait? |

From what I've heard, and others can clarify, the powerplant differences between the Exige and Elise are minimal. I imagine what you may run into as a real daily driver are if the wearable parts on the car wearing too quickly. I.e. the tyres are designed for track use and may only last 10k miles on the road. I have the non-sport-package Elise and am pleased with how the tyres are holding up. I'm not sure if the brakes are different, etc. etc. Get it and ENJOY it! ![]() |

I don't see anything that would be a difference in reliability from the Elise to the Exige and the Elise cars have been here for a while now and have a history so we can know the weaker and stronger points.
I have 21,000 miles on my Elise and minimal issues.

I don't know of any horror stories with the Exige. I personally had one problem and it was quickly fixed.
I could never use the Exige as a daily driver....but that's because I get crazy when anyone breathes on it wrong. I think the car COULD be used that way - but it's really up to the owner and your attitude towards the car.

I daily drive my Elise. I have been for months now. I don't drive it in the very cold weather, in snow or when snow might hit us. I don't know that I could do that with the Exige, the view out the rear is limited and I would feel a bit out of control without my rear view. One could adjust the side mirrors to get rear view, but then I'd have my blind spots back. IMHO

I bought my Elise with the intention of it being a sunny weekend car, but it is so much fun that it has turned into my daily car. Initially I had to get over certain fears, driving it in the rain, parking it in parking lots, etc. But the opportunity for fun and excitement overcame my fears and all has been great. In the end, it is just a car (an AWESOME one though) and it has insurance covering it for any thing unfortunate that may happen. This doesn't mean I am not more careful than if I was driving one of our regular cars. I still look for the most protected parking spots, won't parallel park, if it starts pouring rain when I am out, that's fine, if it is pouring rain when I am leaving the house, I will drive another car (unless there is a chance for clearing
).I love the look of the Exige, but hands down I would take the Elise for regular street driving. This is only because of the rearward visibility. Nothing that can't be over come and gotten used to, but just my preferance. I love my little daily driver!

Not too sure what horror storys with the exiges reliability you've read.
Mine is used daily,no problems...it has a bullet proof jap under the boot. Its about as reliable as you can get.... Used daily..always double parked...no damage from others...1 year old. Very happy with the exige... ![]() |

I drive my elise over 2k miles per month. Talking on the cell phone can be hard, especially with an aftermarket exhaust. If your profession involves you taking important calls, you will have to either know what rpm's you can hit for more quiet performance, or pull over everytime you need to talk. Other than that, I find that driving the elise to work is faster, not only because I am tempted to drive faster, but because people notice me, and leave the lane. You have to understand that the street changes when you get there. People grab video cell phones, change lanes to get a side view, assume you want to pass, etc. Oh and also if you pick your nose while you drive, that has to stop because people always look at you.

If you are a big guy or need to carry a bunch of stuff, these small cars may not be the best choice for a daily driver, but for most people, it'll work just fine.
As it turns out, my Exige is gets better gas milage than my other cars, so now I have a perfectly valid reason to drive it every day. ![]() |
