EXIGE HDR Photos

Hello,

It would be great to collect HDR processed images of the Lotus Exige here.
I am enjoying this car and it looks great in HDR.
Please post pics if you have them.

Thanks,
Todka

I'm trying to remember which drug makes things look like that at some phase of their journey

Those are awesome!
I always thought that HDR would be a cool thing to learn how to do.
I especially like picture #2

I recently did a photoshoot of a Chrome Orange Exige in HDR. The results speak for themselves really!

HDR is an impressive and cool tool. You can really make some unique pictures (above) or just do some subtle exposure changes to bring out much more detail. I especially like the last two of the original post, they look like a poster. Well done.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Initially I just used HDR to slightly enhance my photos. Like Invicitus indicates it's very flexible. Lately I'm using more surrealistic settings. Strength high, smoothing low settings. I'm using Photomatix and am happy to share settings files if anyone wants them. These are taken from 5 images at -4 to +4ev at 2ev steps.

6i9, if you took one, please post it up. Unless your just being a tool? Wasn't quite sure which way your headed there. My bad if I misread.

I look forwards to seeing other people's pictures.

Have a great day.

With HDR, most people don't know how to use HDR to improve their photos. They try too hard and over do it where it totally looks unnatural.. However, if you go in the opposite direction and do it right, the effect can be pretty cool, as we see here..

I really dislike most HDR images. They can be nice when done tastefully, but most are way overdone. I feel like the purpose of HDR is to capture the full dynamic range of what your eye can see. These go over the line to way overdone for my taste, and the halos really ruin it.

HDR has become a tasteless fad that turns perfectly decent photos into color vomit. The examples above fall into the category of overdone HDR vomit, IMO.

Here are some examples of TASTEFUL HDR, done correctly:

In contrast, here is what is typically posted in so-called "HDR Photo" threads:

i have to agree with 6i9. I like the subtle HDR enhancements, but the over the top stuff just never looked good to me.

way over tone mapped.... looks like u took normal pic and tone mapped it... rather than a subtle HDR.

getting a tone mapping plug in and putting the settings on max is not HDR, high dynamic range means to capture the light area's, capture dark area's, and capture natural lighting and then merge them into one photo. (taking several pictures and merging them)

I like the OP's photos. They are creative. Kind of comic book like.

I work with audio, not photography, but both are art.
The OP has presented some "Art". It is interesting to look at, and like any other art, there is no proper way to do it.

Since I'm into audio engineering if I made a sound and put a lot of reverb, and then chorus and then flange to a sound, it would be interesting. Not really proper, but who cares? It's art!

Although if I had to choose a photo in this thread that was the most realistic? I'd choose the 211. If I had to choose the worst it would be the red elise in 6i9's post. If I had to choose the most interesting, it's the OP's #2 wideangle pic.

Are they all art? Yes. Are some of them more pleasing to the eye to some people. Yes. Are you going to please all the people all the time. No.

Cheers,
Skottoman

I don't think the overdone look is right or wrong, its just a different spin on HDR. That being said, it is easy to make really bad HDR images (ask me how I know). The ones in the OP are IMO "tastefully overdone" if there is such a thing.

But I will say that this is a really fantastic subtle HDR image:

+1 Definitely, zygotesoup...

Here's the rule folks.. You either
1) use HDR in a way where viewers think, "Wow that's a great photo"--in such a way that it is not obvious. 99% of viewers shouldn't be able to tell it's been enhanced. Less than 1% of the audience would recognize the HDR enhancements---when they develop a good understanding of how HDR works and know that photo would generally not be possible without multiple shots.
2) Use HDR for a very obvious glowing effect. If done right, the effect can be stellar (as I mentioned before).

But any photographer worth their salt doesn't really need this technique

2) Use HDR as a very obvious crutch to make boring photos appear interesting to the average person. When done right, it was kind of cool the first few times, but after seeing this done by every amateur photographer and their mother it is completely lame now
Fixed

^^^ LOL.. It's true...

HDR has been used in Hollywood for a long time to improve lighting on action sequences, often not capable the same level of detail/contrast that can be achieved easily with still photography (ie. controlled lighting, slow shutters, etc..)

But I don't condemn HDR, it's really a blessing in disguise because average folks who don't have the skills of a pro can now produce much better photos.. It's just that the majority of HDR users produce crap.

Personally I love HDR and use it occasionally to improve details in a scene. I don't have the patience (or expertise for that matter) to light my subject perfectly. Sometimes, a little HDR goes a long way. But I agree, with proper technique HDR isn't necessary. Unfortunately with all of the bad photography, it's become a gimmick.
