Exige Rollcage?

Since the Exige is essentially the more aggressive version of the elise, I wonder why they don't include a rollcage from the factory? Actually I think they should all come with a rollbar alteast. It's not like the either car is practical in any sense.

From the pics and personal accounts, both the elise and the exige have a very decent rollover protection anyhow.

The integral roll hoop is fairly sturdy.

I went over the edge on an alpine pass in my Lotus-built Opel Speedster (same chassis as Elise/Exige)

It held up well. Recovered car:

Must admit that, for the replacement, I got an Exige Cup with the full, factory-fitted roll cage – just in case...

I knew it was an option for the rollbar. But I meant it should automatically come with a rollcage

So, speedyK, the exige cup has the option of a factory installed rollcage... We don't have that option in the US do we?

It wasn't on fire – that's just the headlamps.

It was a tight squeeze to get out from under it, especially as it was on rocks, but I was very motivated by the smell of fuel!

I took the pic – I was concussed and had forgotten about it until I looked at my camera in hospital the next afternoon...

As far as factory options go, I really don't know what you can get in the US. Lotus have a special division, Lotus Sport, that does the Cup version modifications on a finished, standard car and then attaches an additional Lotus Sport build plate and number.

However, the factory are prepared to do work for customers – I know of UK owners who have had Lotus fit harness bars, racing seats, etc. to their already road-regfistered cars.

Why can't all of us just move to the UK??

That would solve many of our problems as enthusiasts!

I don't have an elise or exige yet. Since it's not likely that i'm going to get groceries in it, I would prefer it came with a full rollcage from the factory.

You could buy an Exige Cup car from Lotus Sport or if street legality is an issue (Cup car is not), then ask Lotus Sport for the full rollcage.

There is an Exige for sale in California that has the Lotus installed rollcage in it. See Autotrader link

P.S. Just to be clear, rollbar is not an option, it is in all cars.

The Lotus Sport Exige Cup roll cage is not quite as extreme as that one above.

You are right about that. A roll cage equipped Elise is very very very difficult to get into if you are tall and next almost impossile to get out of with a helmet on. Having tried entry and exit on a friend track car (Elise with an aftermarket rollcage) the exit issues in case of a fire worry me much more that the possible rollover problems.

Oops. Duh. He was replacing that car with an Exige Cup car. Anyway, point is, that cage can be installed by Lotus.
