Increase the intercooler efficiency of your S....

For those interested in increasing the intercooler efficiency on your S, check out the Section beginning at page 36 of the Lotus Supercharger fitting instructions found here -- http://www.bell-colvill.co.uk/admin/...sp?NewsId=4497

Some fettling (I love that word) is required.

Guess I'll never be able to install the SC kit. I don't know how to fettle.

I didn't pull the roof, but looked deep into the scoop with a flashlight and dental mirror and couldn't quite find anywhere to fettle.

Guess I'll have to wait until a day where I'm feeling more ambitious.

could it be possible that the S has already been fettled? afterall, they did add that cosmetic wider scoop on top too....

Based on the diagrams, the rear area to be "fettled" is part of the rear clam (and it's only 2mm of material), in addition to removing the front scoop cosmetic casing and cleaning up that area. That front cosmetic piece alone restricts the flow of air on the S significantly.

so why add it in the first place? all very bizarre.... can't wait for a carbon fiber version of the 255 cup car roof to come out, then i'll change mine...

Cosmetics -- it gives the roof scoop a more finished look. That piece doesn't exist on the Cup 240, but I much rather have the roof scoop in the second PIC.

will they sell someone the parts?

You'd need:
SC and assiociated bits
ECU
anything else? They realy should sell this as an upgrade kit at this point. Not that it would be the best available...

It seems there is some opportunity for "fettling" on the S, but I'm not sure of the effectiveness as the roof butts up against the rear clam and has about the same amount of lip on it at the bottom of the roof (which can't be fettled)

As WW mentioned, there is nothing on the roof piece to be fettled out and I did not see a grill type piece on the S roof vent (like says to be removed in the directions for the retrofit)

See my pic for the amount of lip to be removed from my S. Actually, I got the roof off, scraped some paint off the lip to see what it was made of, then couldn't find the dremel!

What amazed me is the small size of the air intake channel to the intercooler. I'd be very interested to see the input and output temps of the intercooler and exactly how effective it is. I know a lot of work goes into the shape and engineering of the cars. Hopefully the amount of clean air is enough to keep the IC performing well.

Perhaps another option one of our fine performance vendors may consider working on is an IC "spritzer" that would cool the IC with a fine mist of water mixed with the air either through a switch in the cockpit or automatically when the delta falls to a particular level.

How long to pull the roof? Any issues?

For the first time I did this, it took probably less than 10 mins including looking at the somewhat-less-than-helpful manual. Used a T40 socket bit instead of the included wrench which made things MUCH easier.

No real issues. Some tips that aren't in the manual - the manual forgets about the two screws at the rear middle of the roof; the outer two screws that attach to the A pillar are connected to a small metal part that has some kind of guiding pin that slides directly back (toward the rear of the car) to release them. The rest is pretty straightforward.

Getting the roof back on wasn't too bad. Getting the front interior fascia thing centered and the bolts started was the toughest part for me. After that, I just screwed the bolts most of the way in, then tightened in a cross pattern like a wheel... maybe overkill, but I certainly didn't want any gaps in the roof seals.

Another aftermarket idea would be some sort of fiberglass adapter to insert into the IC intake channel in the rear clam so that with the roof off, the IC would still get adequate air.

Komo Tec in Germany are modifying the IC by taking the original and fitting a water jacket. They then fit a radiator in the nose and cool the water that way. Apart from the extra weight it seems like a more efficient system. they then modify the map to optimize it for the increased efficiency of the IC. the optimized set up gives 250hp.

looks like there's some fiberglass you can remove around the inlet. I guess every little bit helps.

You know, I think a nice late spring project is to pull the roof, form a new scoop, sand, prep, and repaint...and fettle the openings while I'm at it.

Thanks for the pics gents.
