Punishment for drunk driving is a joke. It amounts to several fines and few classes. Repeat offender rate is 87% across the country.

It takes quite a hit to trip the airbag - doesn't really matter where the sensor is. Several of us are of the opinion that if the car gets smacked hard enough for the airbags to deploy, the chances of living through it are small.

Glad you're OK - here's to hoping everything works out.

She looked wasted and was arguing with police. I didn't talk to her because I was still stuck in my car. (The clam edges were knocked back, hindering the doors from opening. She basically pulled out in front of my car and there was a car in the lane next to me so I couldn't swerve. My car spun around 180 degrees and left oil and coolant all over Sunset Blvd.

Nope. When the police car and I collided (he admitted his fault), I was doing <20mph, slowing to stop @ red light. Both a/bags went off (even tho I had no passenger & this added to the repair costs). I got a slight abrasion on my arm.

I posted pix and estimate somewhere here.

Interesting. I've seen cars take considerably harder hits and not deploy the airbags.

Sorry to hear it... Glad you're ok. I hate driving around LA on weekend evenings. I'd venture to say that at least 40% of drivers are intoxicated. Hello new car!

Sorry about your car. Glad you're OK.

I usually avoid driving through party places when driving my Elise in SF (or any other cities for that matter). Seen/heard too many cases.

That is weird the air bags did not deploy. You are lucky she wasn't coming right at you...rather up and over you!

Very glad to hear that you are OK.

Very sorry about your car.

Glad you're OK!!

Maybe the airbags didn't deploy as they are designed specifically for a strictly head-on situation and the accelerometers measure this. They don't provide much value in a spin as you described (that is where side curtain airbags are useful).

Again great to hear that the car looked after you! You can always get another (or fix it - maybe)

Ya, it is unfortunately. That particular area is always pretty bad, especially at that time. You have a bunch of drunk drivers that just spent the last however many minutes bottled up (pun intended) on the strip moving 3-5 miles per hour, then it suddenly opens up right there and people turn from crawling reckless to speeding reckless. Again, just glad you're in one piece.

Sorry to hear about your car and going through such an experience. It's great that you are OK and no injuries. Cars can replaced...but people and limbs can't be replaced.
