Thank you both for the concise explanations. Much appreciated.

Oil catch cans that are plumbed back into the engine are also known as oil-air separators. A good one will have a tube extending from the inlet fixture almost to the bottom of the can. It should also be half filled with loose (stainless) steel wool - the sort you buy from a supermarket is good as long as it doesn't contain detergent and you loosen it up a bit.

When the hot air/oil mix hits the inside and contents of the can the oil should condense ut and settle in the can.

Apart from the gunking up the blow by oil can also cause engine knock aka pinging, especially on cars with forced induction. You definitely don't want that.

Cool! I have the same Greddy catch can as Kaz on my mr2 turbo. I will keep it in case I get an Exige S.

The proper catch can routing is still not clear to me. Is there a need for a can on both breather lines? Which breather line carries the most oil/vapor? Is there an advantage to having the breather hoses continue to the intake after the can or can they be capped off and use a filter on the top of the catch can? Does the pcv valve need to be before or after the catch can? I assume both lines need a pcv valve to keep the intake air from blowing the oil back into the valve cover.

If your can vents to the air via a filter rather than back into the intake you are very probably breaking local vehicle emission laws.

Most of the air/oil separators have an oil return line to the crankcase. Has anyone figured out where to run this line?
