Curious who has the most outrageous Lotus? I think this guy wins hands down. He has either a 5 or 600 hp Mazda motor in this car. He set a bunch of records in South Africa achieving some amazing speeds. He has another Exige for road racing. Last I heard he was putting in a dog box and making some other changes that were to shave almost 3/4 of a second to the 1/4 mile time....can you imagine, close to or hitting the 8's. Drag racing this car is sacrilege to me but still amazing to see the wheels come off the ground on a sports-car !!!

More stuff:
Mugen LSD Gear linkage Lower control arms Stuff on the way/ in the works: Custom Rotrex mount Custom chromoly axles (vented, polished, high temp grease) Bump steer kit Motor Sport sway bar/ drop links Windshield + windows in Perspex upgraded main radiator AEM fuel mgt, rail, gauges etc. Need suspension bits but still trying to get the optimum spring/damper combo Should be making it cumfy as I will probably be living in it when the bank account goes totally pear shaped. Have not seen the header in person but it is obvious that Chris Parker is a very talented person! Can't wait to see it. The team of professionals that put this Sun Speed engine conversion kit together are remarkable. As an example, the wiring harness is totally custom made for this particular car and is of military spec. Need something and Mark from MD steps over to his machine shop and makes it on the spot. Tom has imported, converted,or built the sort of stuff you only read about. Ultra exotic rally cars, 959's, R5's, you name the era or the machinery.
Not too worried about the headers as this basic configuration has been done many time before-if there is any rubbing it's easy to remedy. However, thanks for noticing this. I will pass it along. |

When you encounter the problems of the CV axles clearing the rear suspension, give me a call. We had the Newman Haas guy redesign the entire rear subframe to something truly spectacular. Point being, it's already designed, CAD files generated, a CAM program already done, jigs already made.

Also, consider dumping that aluminum foil heat shield bullsh*t, clean the entire firewall and us the gold heat shield from C&R radiators or Pegasus. It's expensive, but better thermal properties and weighs probably 1/10th of the original. Besides, your exhaust is no longer facing the firewall with this conversion.
Furthermore, be cautious of your AN hose assembly. You want to avoid those little sections of hose between the AN fittings. Such short lengths are often subject to failure. If there's another way around this plumbing problem, it should be pursued. Also, is the check valve hiding underneath the frame between the electric solenoid and your 90 degree -10? If not, there really needs to be one there. I'll explain the theory if anyone cares....

Hey Mike-
Thanks for the observations. Will be using the gold foil for the heat shield and air intake which will be taken in from the roof (your car was the inspiration for this.) Please elaborate on the check valve. I haven't seen the car since dropping it off several months ago so I don't know anything about the valve it may be there but if it is not I will pass along. Not worried about the axles as there are a large number of cars running and racing with this kit. I believe you guys went with the kit from Joe M. so this may be the reason for the issue-I may be wrong. I do know he had problems with engine mounts cracking and not delivering product so I went with Sun. The sub-frame sounds very interesting. Budget allowing, I will be contacting you for some clams, spiltter and engine cover. Also, thanks for the tip on the fittings this issue and probably the valve you are speaking of are designed to avoid spraying oil on the headers and having the car go up in flames. Please provide details so we can get it installed. Thanks again for this. Monsi you live in Hawaii so you suck... Thanks IMAN....you have a sweet setup! |

That fire was caused by the (honda conversion) tripod joint in the drive shaft braking and while it failing around it hit the oil filter and hot oil sprayed everywhere and started the fire. They were lucky it was not a total loss.
The Tripod joint is the weak link on these Honda conversions. I am not sure if Composites has solved this with their subframe but it would be worth looking into it. That should be a very fast car when you are done ![]()

Check valve: An accusump injected into the oil line from any arbitrary point will add oil pressure and subsequent flow of oil away from the accusump. The goal with the check valve is to make sure that this pressurized oil feeds the 'IN' or 'RETURN' side of the engine, and doesn't fight the oil pump going the other way.
If I see this correctly, the brass check valve is under the frame out of sight. If it is indeed there, it's in the wrong place and needs to be moved as explained above. The electric valve kit on the Accusump is essential, and I'm glad to see one on your installation. There's no intelligent way to plumb a ball valve into the cockpit operated by the driver which is reason #1. Reason #2 (the really good one), comes from blown race motor stories of woe. I spin out in the grass cuz some knucklehead ran me off the track and I stalled the motor, (when in a spin, both feet in for f*&k sake!!! ).Now I'm pissed and I want to vehemently get back into the race. I fire up the motor, & mash the gas pedal to chase this guy down. Anyone wanna guess at the failure? Motor stalls, I didn't close the manual Accusump valve. Of course I didn't close the freaking valve, I was spinning, scared and pissed! Now, I've got an open Accusump valve, and I've lost whatever stored pressure was once there. Fire up the motor and instead of feeding oil to the engine, the oil pump recharged the Accusump instead. ![]() Spun bearing, lost race, damaged ego & pocket book. One manual ball valve removed from said race car never to be used again. The electric valve takes care of all this automatically via a solenoid and a pressure transducer. Duh.

PWR Barrel A2W IC? Love to see the pics of the end tanks if you can snap a pic or two. Looking for a A2W setup for my car too. If you can provide specs on the A2W setup I would be much obliged. You can PM me if you want the specs staying secret. Thanks!

More fab work
bcee-thanks for the kind words
Just received these pics. Again the total project was nothing but a concept when it was dumped off at MD Automotive. I had not met Mark the owner but he was strongly recommended by Tom at SunSpeed. After having the engine and other stuff done in So Cal everyone would ask who is going to make all this work? I mentioned his name and to a person, they would say excellent, you could not have made a better choice. He is awesome to work with and is as humble as he is talented. Look at his mount for the Rotrex unit!!! He did the layout and everything from scratch. I am a decidedly middle-class guy so all this is a big deal to me. It is awesome when you get lucky and find someone like this. Last edited by ggelise : 11-14-2008 at 10:59 AM. |
