No Livestock on Track!
|
This past Sunday, while teaching for an event sponsored by the Golden Gate Chapter of the BMWCCA at Sears Point, my engine began stumbling at anything other than wide throttle. Here am I, some 600 miles from home, on a Sunday afternoon thinking that I'm going to have to flatbed the car to the nearest Lotus dealership (wherever that is, I don't have a clue), spend the night, and pray that the next day I can get the problem diagnosed and repaired in time to drive back to Oregon. In the back of my mind, I figured it would cost several hundred dollars for the tow, another couple hundred for the diagnosis and repair, and that was assuming the problem wasn't serious and the parts were available.
By pure coincidence, a fellow who works for a shop located within the confines of the track heard my story and introduced me to Jim Dunford of DMC Components, LLC., also located at Sears Point. My understanding is that Jim's behind a lot of the parts used in the ForceFed turbo kit, including the manifold and others. Jim just happened to be at the shop at 5PM. A divine gift, Jim spend ten minutes with a code reader, figured out that I had a bad wire coming out of the throttle position sensor, repaired the connection, and had my motor running again, just like new. He refused to take any money for the help -- although he's coming over for dinner the next time he's in Portland for the American LeMans series (he's a crew chief for one of the race teams) -- and he helped me out despite being under the gun to meet some deadlines for paying customers. Bottom line: Jim's a great guy, clearly technically very capable, thoughtful, and generous/gracious. If he's got anything to do with ForceFed, then consider this an endorsement for their stuff, as well. I feel very lucky. Twin

Great to know! There are good people out there. I've been stuck at the track and I understand the feeling of helplessness. A further endorsement for a great company.

![]() I had a really good endorsement from a pro engine builder that works for Mazda racing teams when I was at SCCA Nationals. He talked about the bits going into the ForcedFed kit and said he new the shop well and spoke very highly of them.

Sorry we didn't get the chance to play. Earlier in the weekend, I kept looking for you, as I thought it would be fun to drive a few laps together. The problem was intermittent but it grew worse and occurred more frequently as Sunday wore on, until, in the final session the car wasn't driveable. But the good news is that nothing serious was wrong, and I got home just fine. I had the DL-1 on for all of Saturday, so I should know what sort of laptimes I was turning later this week when I sort through the logs. Kudos, again, to Jim for taking such good care of me. Twin PS: ZTEC, pls. do say "hi" to Josh for me. I was hoping to do an event with him later in the year, but I'm not sure it'll work out for either of us. Eventually, however, I'm sure I'll get back your way.
