Engine Bay preparation

I've taken to working with the Lotus manual and the instructions side by side. The manual had a few good suggestions on decreasing the fuel pressure and volume. If your engine will not start like mine then just turning the engine over for 20sec will do or you can disconnect this safety lock

I found you need to disconnect the electrical connection to the VVT valve and the brackets for the coil wires to lift the fuel rail up and out of the way.

The connection to the VVT valve was a pain and took me soooo long to unplug. Once the rail was free it was easy to remove the injectors and drain.

I'd recommend removing the TB to gain access to these two driver side intake brackets

I suppose that depends on the visual... Easy enough to trick the ECU with a resistor across the plug to avoid the mil if you remove the Evap bits...

Best,

Phil

I would have had the intake out but I couldn't get the serpentine belt off. I'm embarrased but I couldn't loosen the tensioner. How the heck do you do it?

I'm not worried about the visual, just the MIL and passing the sniff test

get a 19mm socket or box wrench and torque the part circled in red clockwise and you will be able to slide the belt off.

let me tell you... it is a serious pain in the ass with the clam on. I had to remove the passenger side rear wheel and pull on it from below the car while my friend removed the belt from above.

Use a 19mm 6 point (must be 6 point) socket to turn the circled tensioner lug clockwise... You'll need an extension on the ratchet most likely. slip the belt off the alternator...

Good luck!

Phil

Good point about the 6 point socket though Phil. I actually used a looooong 12 point wrench to get mine off... had I stripped it, I probably would have had to cut the belt, and buy a new tensioner.

Ok I tried that but it didn't budge. I guess I didn't use enough muscle. I thought you might have to loosen that pivot bolt below it or something.

Nope. Just get a really long wrench or a breaker bar for more leverage. I had to make a special trip to the store just for this. Real pain in the ass.

I know this sounds too easy, but I just used ONE hand to move the tensioner with this tool* and the other to slide the belt over the alternator. I've used it on many different cars and it's worth at least 3 X what it costs. May have been in the $30 price range...too old to remember.

*Kit 52 13pc "POWERBUILT" Serpentine Belt Tool. It has many sockets and one to fit the Elise/Exege. It comes in a molded case about 2 ft long with more attachments than Madonna's vibrator. And the bar is flat steel around a 1/4" thick and around 18-20" long. I think I got it at Kragen or Autozone years ago. Of all the 'trick' tools I have this is top drawer and a must have.

My BIG tool

Ghetto, cost next to nothing, 3 ft long with more than enough leverage.

Intake stuck

I removed all the brackets and bolts but when I try to slide the intake off the studs it gets stuck half way.

I think it is getting stuck on the VVT valve. Could there be another bracket I missed? I removed the alternator and I'm wondering if I should go ahead and remove the oil return and then the VVT valve to see if that helps. Is there another trick to removing the intake?
