Intercooler heat shield / radiant heat barrier
All -
Viva posted this GT3 car pic in a thread on a different subject ![]() While I understand that most of the heat soak experienced by the intercooler during racing is due to lack of airflow from the hood scoop, has anyone looked to see if there any benefit to having a heat shield like the one pictured above? Is this available for sale? I tried several searches and could not find this discussed before. Notice the shield continues underneath the intercooler as well. On a side note, what is the box in the lower left corner of the pic? Is it an oil catch can?

I think that heat shield is there to keep the heat from the engine bay out of the cockpit.

Directly under the intercooler - between the intercooler and engine, not the shield between the driver compartment and the engine bay.

Oh, that one
![]() I am not sure it goes under the intercooler. It looks like it is attached to the intercooler mount. Yes, it looks like that box is an oil catch can, it looks like a breather line is going into it.

there is a lot of heat comes up from the headers/exhaust in that spot, but it needs somewhere to go, which the cadena has. I wonder if its primarily for when the cars not moving or getting enough airflow to push the hot air back out the rear.

I actually was thinking about placing a gold foil plate under the IC, but I currently have my IC pipes and IC coated with heat dispersant and heat barrier. Dispersant on the inlet pipe and IC and barrier on the outlet where it sits right in front of the engine.

Well, I FINALLY got around to making an intercooler heat shield today. I don't have any way to take measurements, hopefully it helps some. Luckily my garage dog was there to help.

That's cool! Figure out how to get more air to the RLS though....

Nice! What did you make that out of? Cardboard with heat reflector tape?
get a OBDII reader that displays IAT. I pretty much know what to expect since I have it hooked up nearly ever time I drive.

Sheet metal (Home Depot special edition
) then added gold heat reflective material on the bottom side.

I'll have to look into that.
this helps solve one of the sources of heatsoak, which is heat from engine. 2nd is the biggest one and that is heat straight from the supercharger and there's not enough air going through the intercooler to shed the heat.

Further to my comments about my heat shield I just thought I would add a few pics of it lifted from my thread on exiges.com now its fitted.
![]() ![]() Its 1.5mm Aluminium sheet, 580mm wide, 230mm deep with a 45deg kick at 190mm. I managed to get the pressing done for free by a chap I know, however he used an offcut which was quite badly scratched so as I am a gjob I spoke to another friend who got it powdercoated for free  (do you see a pattern?) I know that black is possibly a crap colour for a heat shield but I dont think it will have to much of an effect and it just keeps everything looking tidy and OEM imho. ![]() ![]() As you can see in the following pics the kick helps to guide the heat away from the supercharger and keeps it away from the intercooler. I was still very keen to make sure I did not stop the heat getting away and increase engine bay temps, also the the shield did not make access difficult. ![]() ![]() It does need to come off tomorrow so I can fit some trim tape between the mounts and the heat shield as I have a slight resonation but I can see it so its an easy fix. Would be glad of any thoughts and comments. Boothy |

![]() On a serious note, do you have any plans to log data comparing IATs with and without the shield?

Hi, Boothy, good job.
Can you take some pictures from the right hand side of the engine bay? By the way, do you mind to share the heat sheld's template with us?

that's what I'm talking about. You cannot put that same "kick" on the back also? Seems kind of tight and would have to have a cutout for the oil cap at least.

Blocking the engine cover is fine, as long as you make it in 2 parts:
- The original as Boothy's and add a small lip 30-45 degree up-right. - Then another small piece that screw on that small lip. But does the original one block the dip stick at the back?
