Exactly, dyno's are tuning tools , the dynapack than the dynojet moreso i think, the important numbers are the differences between the baseline run and the final runs, in the powerband, people that focus on peak HP are generally just doing it for marketing purposes thats all its really useful for, if you just simply must try to factor numbers between them for whatever reason, at least start with the torque readings, HP is already generated from the torque, and even though different dyno's calc torque in different ways, HP is going to be derived from the the torque figures.

i read in a post a while ago from the dynapack engineers that one reason they changed the methods used to calculate numbers was simply because of dicussions like that, even though they preferred the other way, it got so out of hand that the calcs were changed, i think thats one of the reasons you see different values for different versions of the dyno software, same for dynojets too, different versions give different readings and very importantly the dyno operator can set a different scale, its not the same from dyno to dyno.

but the dynojet has a whopping great roller turning.

i think the a word from the link from churches ( a dyno shop we've used in the past too ) sums it up best, "don't"

Back when I was racing full seasons, podium finishers would be required to have their cars dyno'd. It was kinda a joke as it got to the point where we all knew what dyno would be used and what it would typically read in variance from other dyno's. End result is that we'd tune the car for the dyno being used at each track -- the variance was that significant. wheel dyno's were used, not engine dyno's for obvious cost/time reasons.

One of our series rules was a 9.5:1 weight/HP ratio max.

Indeed, there are so many factors you can alter on each dyno, I've seen operators change them run to run.

Dynojet are local to me in vegas, I go in from time to time, its really interesting to see and hear the stories they tell about this sort of thing and some of the photoshops / slogans they've got on the office walls, a lot of head shaking going on, Dynapack had similar stories when I went there.

I'd like an engine dyno, i just don't think my neighbours/HOA would be into it though

They'll let you have one if you give them a free tuning session whereby you say you can get more MPGs from their vehicle.

Phil's good on delivery, I just received Phil's fuel delivery setup today -- can't wait to get it installed -- this alone should help make motor #3 last a lot longer -- you'll be yet another TVS owner I'll envy.

Dynapak & Dynojet results

It gets more interesting if you go beyond looking at peak figures and plot the curves against each other. One of my cars made more power at 4000-5000 rpm on a dynojet than a dynapak, but less at peak.

If you then plot the the difference you'll get a curve which shows a power relationship between speed and loss (mathmatical power, not engine power). I believe that the tire loss is a function of the square of the speed. Thus there is less loss on low speed low hp engines than the opposite, and therefore you can't use exactly the same correction factor between dynapak and dynojets.

Congrats !

What are you going to be using for an intake? The IC connection.

I'll see if i can make a picture of the Katana Elise who already has this A/W IC setup although i'm not sure when I'm going to be at my garage.
I remember the intercooler (the 'iron box') is on the driver side with a standard air filter cone attached to it, the pump is on passenger side. It will run on water, alcohol or combination of the two. Sorry, can't recall details anymore, it has been some weeks ago. If you want I can give you phone# / email of my garage who installed it on the other elise and will also install it on my Elise. He can tell you the details.

Very Cool Guys. I'm actually machining on some of your bits 'n pieces today

I updated the website with a little more EFI info, and some other wiring diagrams and whatnot (that many already have) that may come in handy... I'll continue to add to the site to try and get some more handy info out there for this and whatever else???

Best,

Phil

Hi Folks,

First post! I'm the proud new owner of a 2005 Elise, to replace my 2000 C5 Corvette, and I couldn't be happier about the decision!

Anyway, it was this thread that had a a major impact on the model I chose, as I had originally been looking at factory supercharged Elise's, so I've saved quite a bit of money by dodging that. Oh, and the fact that I live 20 minutes from Stilwell KS could come in handy in the near future! So thanks for all the great info in this thread, it was very helpful!

Best regards, glad to be part of the Lotus community!

Phil,
The TVS was THE supercharger that Forcedfed wanted to use on my car but they were unable to source one at the time. I am VERY interested!
Do you think it would be advisable to loose my water to air intercooler? I would still have to keep the entire liquid system(hoses, pump, etc.) since I have a liquid cooled oil cooler in the same system. Is getting rid of the oil cooler altogether on this engine an option. I do live in a temperate area. SF Bay Area. I would love to loose the weight! My coolant pump is about 20lbs!
Call me if you get a chance(510)502-0172
