Refrigerated intercooler

I saw a advertisement today for a new sports car promoting a “refrigerated intercooler” I am no engineer but would it make any sense to use the air-conditioning compressor to feed an evaporator in front of the intercooler on a supercharger. I was also noticing some intercooler sprayers that spray Co2 at the intercooler. In Florida, the hot summers really impact the performance of the superchargers. Any ideas?

some people pack dry ice around their ICs for drag races...

I would need to do alot of math to figure out if you could even cool your intake charge with your ac pump... and then whether it will result in more power gained than lost is another matter entirely

I don’t think we are looking at a Perpetual motion machine. Although not very knowledgeable on this issue, I would believe that the loss of power resulting from engaging the ac compressor would be significantly less than the power gained on a HOT track. Is a supercharger itself a perpetual motion machine?

Im not aware of any oem ac compressors that can operate at such high RPMs. During hard WOT acceleration, most AC compressors shut down to prevent damage due to excessive speed of the compressor.

So using the AC system to cool the intake charge will probably not work for a track environment where you are WOT much of the time.

just as with a supercharger you are allowing more chemical energy to be put into the system... its just a matter of efficiency

the Ford Lightning truck did this AFTER they switch away from Freon. Freon was flammable and had some bad side effects.

I spray a very light mist of water / methanol (50/50 by weight) on the forward side of my intercooler.

Works quite well.

Spraying both intra-charge-air and externally on the intercooler, usage is about 1/2 L per 20 minutes of track time.

I saw an insane souped up Detomaso Pantera in the east coast a few years back with twin turbos and custom fabbed refrigerated intercooler. I think it made 4 digit horsepower.
