Ronins New Heat Exchanger setup (Pics)

For those of you who own a Lotus and are interested in modifying said Lotus Supercharger cooling system - Here is the next evolution in the ever changing setup.
I wanted to share a few pics of Franks new Heat Exchanger setup from ProAlloy in the UK

Very cool, it's working very very well, I think he said he's getting below ambient while cruising. Good thing he ordered two sets as I am getting the other one !! Will post results once it's in

Having the air to air sc intercooler up front require to also add plumbing from the engine in the back like oil coolers, right?

I am tired so I am not sure I fully understand your question but Franks setup is he used the stock dual oil coolers and converted them into water coolers run in line with the heat exchanger in the front mount location and he just added the large heat exchanger seen in the pics for a total of "FOUR" heat exchangers for his Air to Water system and relocated his oil cooler to the back of the car. It is not an A/A system, I hope that helps.

Maybe want to check the gauges, as that would not be possible. Since your ambient is your heat absorber. But I could believe a couple degrees above. I had a turbo car that would stay only like 10-15* above ambient. In fact it would drop a couple degrees when I would get on it...I'm guessing because it was a failry over sized turbo and low boost was outside its effeciency.

What's up with the reversed NACA ducts on the bottom panel (ground last photo)?

Water to Air exchanger appears to be in front of the airflow to the engine cooling radiator. Have you measured the effect of preheating the air to the radiator on engine temperature?

i was thinking the same thing. what effect is there running air through the heat exchanger then sending the same air to the radiator.

His car has been running too warm on very hot days (115F+ on track) when pushed hard at the track, this could have been contributing to it, but the stock oil coolers transfer most of the heat first, then the water goes to the front intercooler, then it goes to the new intercooler underneath the radiator. He's also changed out his thermostat to a 170degree one, and with these changes and that much water volume in the system going over 4 exchangers his car is running very cool, I think barely tapping 180 or so when being pushed.

For some reason I haven't had any problems with my car running too hot either and am planning to plumb the lines the same way, having the exchanger after the two oil coolers I am already using. For the record, using the two front oil coolers for the intercooler radiators *alone* has worked perfectly, anyone planning to do so it's well worth it, works exactly as planned. I think there are some older posts on MM and here with my results, they are similar to what Frank got.

Nice to see the pictures of the other part of my Charge cooler kit installed on my S here S Charge Cooler as mine was fitted by Proalloy I never saw the sandwich of radiators that were installed
They do look great.
As for excess temps in the engine I have seen no change yet, but it is rather chilly here at the moment

OK, let me understand this, you've taken the two front oil coolers with existing plumbing from engine bay, and tied in the a/w heat exchanger added with the ProAlloy kit between the two front coolers making them all in series. Thus hot fluid from a/w intercooler goes from the engine compartment, up the plumbing on driver side, through d-side (oil) cooler, though ProAlloy cooler, through p-side (oil) cooler and then back down the passenger side to the engine bay and the intercooler. (Or the reverse of course, does not really matter.) Zat right?

Seems like such an install would avoid the hassle of running fluid lines from a/w intercooler to front a/w cooler (i.e. stock ProAlloy set-up) and increase the cooling capacity of the a/w intercooler. Good idea, I like it.

If I'm reading things right, the oil cooling function is replumbed to a new oil cooler located some place in the rear / engine compartment? Do you have a link on that install and/or pictures?

(Sorry Ace10, searching something like "oil cooler" gets me too many hits and I'm too lazy to figure out the proper search string.)

I'm seriously considering the ProAlloy a/w intercooler set-up, but dread the idea of having to run additional fluid lines through the frame.

4 heat exchangers???? That sounds like a bit of overkill, no? I had a Magnacharged Z06 that I ran on track and the fluid in the reservoir, with ony one heat exchanger in the front, would be quite cool even at the end of the session.
I wonder just what the difference in fluid temps would be if you just used the front exchanger or a more efficient front exchanger? And what kind of air flow can one achieve with that triple-layer of coolers?
I really don't mean to come off sounding the wrong way, but 4 exchangers to cool th I/C fluid...doesn't sound right...

Be good,
TomK

ace996 -

It was more of an evolution of things that Frank went through to end up with the 4 intercoolers in series...don't believe it was originally planned.

+1 on the oil cooler photos request, Kaz.

wonder if a water sprayer or CO2 sprayer is in the future for this setup....

The single Proalloy front rad is plenty enough unless you are running mega boost on very hot days, Wayne at Proalloy is just using the single one for his 370bhp Audi Turbo powered Exige he is running AFAIK 15psi of boost.
As for fitting the coolant lines it just takes time it is not very hard to do.....
