Its also been proven in R&T that the GTR's true horsepower is about 540 crank.

The article may have been in car and driver....

the tests are pretty much irrelevant
In the UK, and especially in the west, wet can be the prevailing weather. The comics have a limited window of access to press fleets of several manufacturers, and a limited window for track access.
I understand the methodology having being born and raised in the UK.

Car and Driver dyno'ed the pre production test GT-R's. and discovered they had been given ringers by Nissan with about 50 more hp than Nissan claimed.

re: GTR...

A car mag did a great write up on how the GTR is able to get it's acceleration numbers despite having a relatively poor power-to-weight ratio. The two big factors are:
  • All wheel drive. This one is obvious. It offers a substantial advantage from a standing start.
  • The transmission. The GTR has a duel clutch transmission that allows < 60 ms shifts -- approaching F1 shift speeds. In effect, there is no time in which the car is not accelerating. This is a HUGE advantage over standard transmissions.
It was a great article and the numbers clearly showed a big advantage from the lighting fast shifts.

That's not what they discovered. They discovered that Nissan is probably underrating the cars by 50hp and that goes for the production cars too, so there were likely no ringers.

What was interesting was that of the five cars tested, the two that did not perform as expected (or as expected for 480hp) were on CA gas, which is 91 octane.
One theory is that Nissan rated the cars at 480hp on the lowest possible premium fuel so that in worst conditions, the car is still making what they claim and when operated with better fuel, the cars are making more horsepower. Ye ole under-promise and over-deliver routine
