2-Eleven US Arrivals?
What is the latest that everyone has heard? After the affidavit fiasco, the latest (that I've unofficially heard) is that the feds are now demanding of Lotus USA that every new purchaser of 2-Elevens have in their possession, a competition race car license! Big Brother at its best! The earliest that I've heard that the cars will now be produced (after they haggle a settlement to this lastest delay) is March with April or May deliveries. Can anyone confirm or deny what I've heard?

Sounds like a good excuse to do the Skip Barber 3- Day race school
![]() http://www.skipbarber.com/racing_sch...ay_racing.aspx I did that last year and it was amazing and I now have my SCCA race from just doing that course ![]() If you are one of the few lucky people that have a 2-Eleven on order I would highly recommend that you do a race school and get your license. While the 2-Eleven is an amazing car that is very easy to drive fast it is also a very fast car I think we can all learn a thing or two now and again...at least I can![]() You guys are going to be very happy ![]() ![]()

I began doing track time in a '91 M100 Elan in '92, that made a fool of a number of Porsches. I did "Skippy" back in 1993 and some of his races in '93/94. Have been vintage racing a 23B since '95. The Elise/Exige/Exege S still hasn't matched the times or the thrill of the 23. I'm hoping the 2-Eleven will, while giving me reliable seat time at a lesser expense! Whatever your driving background, the Feds have no business mandating to Lotus what skill set buyers of 2-Elevens should have. Period!

I wonder if its got much to do with the drivers ability levels, more that the car is going to biased for use on the race track and not the street.

Correct -- it's not a driver-skill issue -- more like an added barrier to entry. |

You think the cars would show up today! Considering it's 2/11/2008
Thats my guess.

For those interested...there are also SCCA driver's schools (although you need to provide your own car (such as a rental race car) running this month.
And if Lotus pushes this, one could consider just sending the paperwork off the SCCA and getting a Novice license. If you don't do the driver's school, of course, you can't use your Novice license to race, but it might satisfy the "I have a competition license" requirement and for 60 bucks be cheaper than fighting "the Man" on this. I don't have the affadavits with me but each signed customer waiting for a 2-Eleven was required to sign that he/she was aware that the 2-Eleven was not street legal and for race track use only. The car was not to be registered in any state and that if it was, the 2-Eleven owner would be held as the manufacturer of the vehicle and liable and punishable as the manufacturer would be if they were to do the same. Deep down I think someone in the Feds knows that early non-Federalized Elises were registered in various states as Europas, Elans, 7's, etc. In order to avoid similar situations, they've gone overboard for 34 cars! If the US 2-Eleven were available with headlights as are the European models and there were thousands of them being imported, they might have a point. Otherwise..... They won't be satisfied until they can take total control of our lives.

This is not that unusual. The Viper Competion Coupe required a competition license and you simply cannot get GT3 Cup car unless you are actually competing in Rolex or Grand Am. It is to have some real assurance that the car stays on track and off the street, not a bad idea after reading several postings of folks wanting to put the car on the street. A competition license seems silly as the car is as much a trackday car as competition car, but it is hard to have any clear barrier to street driving.
That said, I have seen Atoms on the street and the Radical can be put on the street, too. Frankly this seems like a big wast of time for the feds, as at most about 3 people might drive the car on the street and 2 of them will regret that in about a week. |
