Ya know, I was really gonna dispute that, the paperwork I signed included details about a $35K a day fine. And I knew Bill Gates imported a 959 he was not allowed to drive. But... after doing very little research you may be right. Bill Gates and Paul Allen (founders of Microsoft) got a new law on the books, so they could legally drive their 959's

Maybe if enough people sign up. To my understanding only 34 were ordered for the U.S. market. If any of those 34 have some clout or a name well enough known to help influence things it may be possible.
I don't know about otheer areas, but around here driving a 2-11 on the street would be a risky proposition at best.

Exactly. It's actually a NASCAR license. All thet's needed is a pulse (and a drivers license).

i was for a very short time looking at the atom, and had my lawyer look into what wed have to do to make it legal for the street. at least in nj, a car like the atom, or 2/11 could very well become legal.

A couple of notes.......

In the US the buyer needs to provide documentation to the factory and NHSTA that the car WILL NOT be used on the street.

The buyer must also furnish a racing license.

I've seen this a couple of places on Forums but without ANY reference or source. I'm one of the 34 and asked my dealer specifically about this "requirement". He stated "No such thing" He's been importing racing and track cars for a long time and there is no such requirement from DOT, EPA, NHTSA... who are you hearing this requirement from?

Well I signed the forms and gave a copy of my racing license.

The reason US cars cannot be imported with the headlights is because DOT wants to ensure they are not street legal. Apparently there is a new crew at DOT NHtsa and they have the time and energy to police 34 cars.

Next thing you know no more street legal componant cars.

Well, as you may note, I'm a dealer. Im getting this straight from LCU as recently as this morning. I have the forms that must be filled out. If they are not, it will push your car to the end of production or may cancel your order all together. I suggest your dealer call LCU and talk with his Regional Sales Rep.

This was requested from all buyers in late December/ January. When I called and spoke with LCU this morning, they notified me that they had recently (within the past few weeks) negotiated this requirement away. The other DOT/EPA forms are still required.

Reminds me of my Exige order - all Lotus could tell us was that they were sure they'd built the car, they just didn't know what had happened to it after that (no record of shipping it, delivering it to port, receipt in the US, nada).

Well at least lotus is not some BS branded operation like ferrar is these days, they are still all about the car.

Kinda like the old days at maranelo when a customer would arrive to pick up a car on to have to wait a week or two while it was built.

Seriously though between the one extreme and the other lays better info.

The first eight have been assigned serial numbers. It is correct that the feds have now waived the competition license. The waivers, I think, are still a requirement. Lotus USA is traveling to the UK next week. More information of their production status should be available after they return.
