700 Lotus at Fuji for Japans first Lotus Day

The rumour going around is that this was the biggest every gathering of lotus cars ever - dont know if thats true or not but wouldnt surprise me. it was certainly the biggest gathering in japan ever according to the Lotus japan people. we had 700 cars turn out and an astonishing 600 cars taking part in track events! Thats a lot of cars and with 50 cars in each session made for a few exciting near misses....

I knew it was going to be a special day when i pulled onto the expressway heading for fuji and saw in the lane infront of me a 211 and a whole bunch of super 7s exhausts burbling and chrome shinning. you know that feeling you get driving with a few cars in convoy...imagine what its like when around 1 car in 5 on the road around you is a lotus! the expressway from tokyo to fuji was like a moving lotus museum. i saw almost every model ever made during that ride, including 7 (i counted) formula lotus cars on trailers and a bunch of turbo esprit. at the circuit it was just a sea of lotus cars.

The website is here (sorry in japanese) but you can see the cars types that had track sessionshttp://www.lotus-cars.jp/jld/lotus_owner.html

There was a bunch of f2, f3 and fj lotus cars there also that were fun to see racing, as was the lotus 211 cup race whose sound level wasnt far off the formula cars session

The Japanese really love Lotus. I had a pleasure of attending the Team Lotus 50th Anniv celebration a few years ago at Fuji. What a great time. Sweet track!

Thx for posting the pix!

Thanks for posting these pictures! I've always been amazed at the love for Lotus in Japan.

It's interesting that the orange exige #48 at the bottom left of the group photo has framed windows. Are they just fixed lexan?

What a fantastic event!

You really don't need a caption to know that photo was taken in Japan, just look how neat and orderly all the cars are parked. Every one is lined up exactly even, straight and gapped perfectly!!!

Cheers,
Kiyoshi

My dad sold his long time Elan (4th street car built) to a guy in Japan back in 96. I wonder if it was there? I sure would like to buy it back.

That looks like an 11. The 23s are the tiny mid-engine race cars, not much larger than a kart. There's one that's BRG, and one that's white.
